It was a brothel scene that birthed modern art. In 1865, the crowds went berserk in front of Manet’s painting of a courtesan— sobbing, shouting, getting into scuffles. Now, "the bored prostitute in her unmade bed is making its way to New York as a focal point of “Manet/Degas,” MOMA’s fall exhibition of "two city boys & the modern capital they painted." nytimes.com/2023/09/09/arts/de

The Fauves, led by Matisse, van Dongen, Derain and others. It was an old boy's club, right? No. A new exhibition demonstrates how women were central to the movement—as artists, dealers, and inspiration. news.artnet.com/art-world/fauv

Native American art "is considered the best basket-making culture in the world, & she was the best in it.” Arguably, Louisa Keyser’s baskets were made possible not only by her talent & efforts, but by the support of white patrons. nytimes.com/2023/09/05/arts/de

Her rediscovery in 2018 rocked the art world and placed her as an important pioneer of abstract painting. Now comes the scrutiny: Was she the sole author of the body of work, or were the paintings a collaboration by her spiritual collective? nytimes.com/2023/08/28/arts/de

Five artists explored the landscape along the river Seine northwest of Paris in the late 1800s. As their paths crossed during this pivotal time, van Gogh, Seurat, Signac, Bernard, and Angrand discovered new motifs to inspire artistic experiments, forged friendships & ignited feuds, and encouraged & critiqued one another’s work. artic.edu/highlights/58/five-a

They enjoyed a mutually-inspiring friendship from the moment they met as young emigres in Paris in 1905, and a host of 20th century artists drew inspiration from the creative energy that burned between them. The friendship between Picasso & Stein in the Parisian avant-garde scene of the beginning of the 20th century created a lasting legacy in all of the arts. sothebys.com/en/articles/gertr

Wanted to take this one home from Bonhams NYC, but... outbid. 'The Hidden Apple,' Philip Evergood (1901-1973). In the mid-1940s, his attention was increasingly toward the plight of women. The painting "creates so vividly the sense of a vital and vulgar humanity." Evergood said, "There's a universal Eve there, yet there's a pathos, I felt." liveauctioneers.com/item/15880

Two street artists separated by time and distance, yet "united by their social engagement and creation of a distinct visual language." Haring & Banksy both "elevated themselves out of a clandestine subculture of street art & into the public consciousness using the most visible public spaces to reach their audience." sothebys.com/en/articles/traci

Two individual artists, a couple, drive the move away from abstract expressionism to Bay Area Figuration as their life experiences, and their art, evolve. An impressive exhibition at Crocker Art Museum weaves the histories, the reciprocal influence with other artists, and simply wonderful, powerful works. [VIDEO] youtube.com/watch?v=3pJxXOFh-y

When collectors die, what to do? The fear is that everything just ends up at a garage sale. Their families face a lot of decisions—collectors and their collection are often simply disconnected from their families: “I’m not going home and talking to my partner or to my kids about what I collect because, nine times out of 10, they don’t care." nytimes.com/2023/07/30/style/c

It's a face only a lover of Evergood could like. 🙂 Hanging it!
'Head of a Man', 1962, Philip Evergood (1901-1973)
Evergood became one of the leading Modernists of the 20th Century, with styles in the mid-century combining abstraction & magic realism. His subjects in the 1930s made him one of the leading Social Realists of the period. Private collection.

Painting. It's a way to unburden yourself, the doctor explained. Near the end of his life, Dr. Gachet urged van Gogh to resume painting again, and the result was truly frenetic in the 70 days before his death. hyperallergic.com/832113/the-d

I couldn't help myself; happy birthday to me. Large, mesmerizing abstract expressionist work, 1970s. 'Five Nudes on Blue," Harold Frank (1921-1995). "Like his idol de Kooning, variations on women became a lifelong, consistent, ubiquitous theme." Growing up in the tenements of the Lower East Side during the Great Depression, he found Abstract Expressionism an ideal means to explore the angst of his world.

"Even in the Jazz Age, when homophobia was less aggressive, to offer up suggestive scenarios to the mainstream was more outrageous —more secretly outrageous —than anything Cubism’s show-offs could propose." Think of Leyendecker’s art as a Trojan horse: those with the will to see could not have missed the possibility that romance was budding in Leyendecker’s ads.

Thrilled to hang this one. Though little recognized, Cikovsky’s portraits were sensitive & poignant. ‘Young Artist,’ Nicolai Cikovsky (1894-1987). Educated in Russia, Cikovsky came of age during a period of cultural, political, & social upheaval. Emigrating to the US in 1923, he was exhibiting at the Whitney in 1930s. He associated himself with a regional artistic circle on Long Island of Burliuk, Constant, the Soyers.

The self-conscious and sophisticated primitivism that he adopted found Basquiat toying with the premise that a Black artist should in fact be ‘primitive.’ He acknowledged Picasso as one of his most important influences, and 'Untitled,' (Pablo Picasso), painted & drawn in oil, acrylic & oilstick on a square metal panel, is a bold tribute from one 20th-century titan to another.

It was the last painting sitting on his easel. It was also radically different in texture & tone from his better-known masterpieces of a decade earlier. What holds us entranced is the carefully choreographed clash of pattern & pigment that reveals how far Klimt had travelled creatively in the decade before his death. bbc.com/culture/article/202306

After Vincent encouraged colleagues Gauguin & Bernard to exchange portraits of one another with him, he was shocked when Gauguin’s painting arrived. He felt Gauguin appeared "ill and tormented." Hence the infamous invitation to come paint with van Gogh in Arles, where Gauguin could "eat, walk with me in some beautiful countryside... and in a word, thoroughly enjoy himself.”
