The #IEA reports on Australia’s energy policy and practices every five years. The latest one has just been released, again with much delicacy in the wording as they outline the inadequacies of our performance.

On gas exports the report comments that local gas prices have been rising “in step with LNG netback prices”. Netback price is basically the international price with LNG production costs deducted.

It then discreetly notes that “this is a unique situation for a producer and exporter.”

👉 In other words, we are the only major LNG exporter that has not set up mechanisms to protect local gas consumers. 👈

The report also points out that #energy #poverty is becoming an issue in #Australia.

Payday loans are crazy #expensive, often close to 60% p.a. (sixty!) if you include the fees. Charging above 60% is #criminal #usury in #Canada. However, loans of up to $1500 are exempt, so the typical payday loan #lender could charge even more.

"I live well below the #poverty line, so I live in a cheap, slummy apartment #building where #everybody else is poor, too. For the most part, I like this setup. I grew up in poverty, and I’m not comfortable around moneyed #people. (It’s a topic for another day but people with money are really weird about, well, money. You can’t even talk about it around them.) But it definitely has its drawbacks. My neighbours and I are always running out of #food and #meds.

One of the many things I like about poor people’s culture, though, is that we tend to be really good at #sharing #resources.
