@leadegroot and I visited the Kumbartcho Sanctuary in Eaton's Hill this morning. This is a 6ha property that has over many years, been replanted with a large variety of native plants and trees, and features a small dam, and part of the South Pine River.
It is teeming with birds, some of which I had not yet photographed.
There were two standout finds this morning, the first was the #PowerfulOwl roosting high in a tree. These are Australia's largest owls.

Female Powerful Owl looking out of her nest hollow just after dusk. Yesterday she didn't leave the nest, but tonight she spent 5 min looking out then flew to spend 12 min with her partner before returning to the nest, perhaps not wanting to leave her egg(s) for too long. #Owl #PowerfulOwl #WildOz #Nest

The Powerful Owlet. My goodness, that stare. You can tell that she is now fully operational and self contained as an Owl having developed from a egg about 6 1/2 months ago.

Lobbying Council, with others, results in pertinent aesthetics for the local area - yes it very much looks like Sheba the local matriarch powerful owl #standup4nature #powerfulowl
The Powerful Owlet has been hunting for herself recently. She seems much more independent than many of the Owlets we follow. We suspect she may leave her parents to find her own territory quite soon. #Owl #Powl #PowerfulOwl #WildOz

a good example of a maturing owlet (4 month period) - chevron ‘love heart’ pattern development #powerfulowl
Flossy the hunter - in this photo you can see the owlet becoming more adult like in colouring and pattern - to the right of her left eye you can see remnants of blood stain from a suspected hunt - that would indicate owlets may be hunting as early as 4 months after fledging #powerfulowl
We had a #PowerfulOwl hunting party in our backyard last night and I think our resident long-nosed #bandicoot was dinner. #Predation #WildLife #Sydney

Powerful Owlet intently watching a Brush-turkey on Christmas Day. I wonder what she had for dinner that night.

I love how the Powerful Owls eyes independently dilate in response to differential light. They are very clever. #wildoz #PowerfulOwl #Powl #Owl

The Powerful Owlet has lost almost all of her baby feathers. Another month or two and she will be almost indistinguishable from her parents. #wildoz #Powl #PowerfulOwl #Owl
