Another relic from my early OS X Server sysadmin days: my ATX Rackmount G4.

Our company needed a low-power, low cost Mac server with dual network interfaces. The Mac Mini was brand new on the block and USB ethernet adapters were flaky at best. So I decided to put a Sawtooth G4 motherboard into a modified 4U rackmount case and install OS X Server onto it.

A little bit janky, but it worked great at its intended application for years!

On August 31, 1999, Apple Computer unveiled the PowerMac G4! The PowerMac G4 was a milestone in Apple's history.

This powerhouse came equipped with 64MB of RAM, a CD-ROM drive, and a cavernous 10GB hard disk. It wasn't just a computer; it was a digital command center, ready to tackle any task with grace and speed as they marketed it as a “personal supercomputer”.

There's a #powermac #g5 available for 25€, 10min from my house.
It's advertised as functional and is the same gen as the one I have.

I'm tempted to get it just to have spare parts for the first one, especially the power supply and fans.

It will be hard to explain to my SO why we must store another useless massive machine, though 😅

Sad that my old #MacBookAir isn't working anymore. Thank you for the 7 yrs of #productivity. Cool that I was able to stretch it that long. But please work again just so I can get my files back. Lesson: have a backup.

My OS 9.22 install doesn't seem to like my Dell Ultrasharp monitor. I can only start it with the Extensions off (booting while holding shift). All was fine and dandy, but now I need Quicktime :(

The same computer (PowerMac G4 Digital Audio) runs fine with Tiger with the same monitor.

Any ideas on how to fix it? I have already disabled all extensions on the Extensions Manager and it did nothing to fix it.

This was an actual “American Girl” accessory in the 90s, somehow fully licensed by #Apple.

Does anyone know what the final retail price for the #powerpclaptop is likely to be? A ballpark estimate is fine, I'd like to buy more than one, for #gentoo #linux #ppc testing when it comes out and I'm trying to plan.

I'm sure the #laptop will be on the expensive side due to the size of the production run, but it should consume less power and take up less space than an old #powermac #g5. It also won't spring a leak!

I got my favorite computer of all time, my blue and white Power Mac G3 out of storage today. A few years ago I picked up a practically new zip drive upgrade for it, but I never got around to installing it. The tape on the box was cut when I got it, but everything inside is absolutely brand new! Back in 2021, about two years ago, I bought a used PowerMac G4 MDD and souped it up with a faster processor, an SSD connected to a bootable SATA to PCI-X card, a USB 2 PCI adapter and a Geforce 4 Ti 4600, which is the fastest card that works on Mac OS 9.

The goal was to create the fastest Mac OS 9/Mac OS X Tiger retro Mac gaming machine
