Here the culprit (crossed out in first picture). The buck converter used is rated for 3A, but the #Nintendo64 requires 2.7A. With closed case, it gets too hot. Below is a 5A one that came with heat sink. But I'll have to reorder the perfboard a bit. Also, I'll add a heat sink for the MOSFET. Second image is the new layout.

Time to pull up the power supply schematics and determine (guess) what's causing the capacitor to blow :blobcatSadPats:

Dangnabit. The schematics of the PSU are suggesting that 12 ohms is correct. There is a beefy 7w resistor between 5v and 0v which just so happens to be 12 ohms. There is nothing else there other than a few caps.
There MUST be something on the first board. When that's plugged in I'm sure that both 5v and 12v are both low resistance to ground with 5v being 12 ohms and the 12v being about 30 ohms.
Any advice from the mastoverse?

J'ai presque fini mon bricolage pour refaire une alimentation pour le VG5000 : il faut du 5V que je fais avec une petite alim à découpage , et du +12/-12V avec un convertisseur qui part du 5V (le -12V ne sert pas et va directement sur le connecteur d'extension, le +12V sert juste pour le signalement sur la prise péritel).
J'ai ajouté un peu de filtrage sur les tensions de sortie car à l'oscilloscope ce n'était vraiment pas beau.

Tech fail of the week:
- Bought new single power supply to replace multiple smaller power supplies
- Assumed it would not only remove chaos from the hallway but maybe also save some power
Turns out my new setup draws 5 Watts more 🤦‍♂️ than the old one.
Power factor is a bit higher and probably power supply efficiency is also not that great, either.
Well. At least I don't need a huge power strip, anymore. Just a single power outlet.

I tried powering LED lights with this wall wart and it flickered so badly I decided to open it up to see what was inside.
It is basically just a multitap transformer, a full bridge rectifier, and a couple of smoothing capacitors. No adjustable voltage regulator.
