I’ve been working on a performance-installation project with my regular dance collaborator Irene Fiordilino called “WHERE DOES A BODY END?”. On Friday afternoon we’ll be sharing work in progress at the Laban Building in Deptford from around 12:30 onwards. We’ve shared some of this before but this is the first time we’ve attempted a really long form version. If you fancy coming along to see then PM me for details. #phd #PracticeAsResearch #transdisciplinary

Catching up! Just posted volumes 15 & 16 of my composition notebooks online at https://notebook.caitlinrowley.com - this brings things up to early August 2022, with intense work towards the end on From the Exquisite Dark, but also some bits on A Memory of Wind & some other bits & pieces. Almost back on track! #PracticeAsResearch #ArtisticResearch #PracticeBasedResearch

Good #writing session this morning - working on the section about how establish discursive relationships between private & public creative spaces through interdisciplinarity in my work. All underscored by Iris Garrelfs' 'Bedroom Symphonies' on repeat. Realllllly enjoying this: https://linearobsessional.bandcamp.com/album/bedroom-symphonies #listening #experimentalMusic #soundArt #PhDLife #PracticeAsResearch #ArtisticResearch

Good #writing this morning. I'm working through a section on using #interdisciplinarity to establish discursive relationships between private and public creative spaces (i.e. studio/notebook/stage) in my portfolio pieces. Finding this section more satisfying than previous bits in this chapter & I suspect at the end of it I'll be able to chop out a bunch of stuff from other sections, which will be v good. #PhDLife #ArtisticResearch #PracticeAsResearch #PracticeBasedResearch

Back to #writing today after a couple of days off, & making much better progress than I have been. I'm reshaping my chapter on #interdisciplinarity, & I'm MUCH happier with it. Have just written 3,000 words on the #notebook project, the vlog & how the notebook spreads function in HAYDN SPACE OPERA & now I'm feeling super-guilty for not keeping up with getting the books online. Will deal with another volume or two this week. Yes, I will #PracticeAsResearch #PhDLife

Started a new #ProceduralBlending diagram today, this time for Quiet Songs - it's really surprising me how it's making me think about how far back some of the ideas for these pieces have started, with seeds in work done (used or not) for multiple previous works. Also making me think hard about why I've made the decisions I've made, which is proving valuable. #PracticeAsResearch #PracticeBasedResearch #ArtisticResearch #PhDLife

This #ProceduralBlending diagram for Haydn Space Opera is beginning to terrify me - & it seems it's beginning to terrify #excalidraw too because when I save, some of the longer arrows bounce back on themselves & stop being attached to where they should be - anyone else found this/found a fix for this? (possible solution: don't make your diagram so damn enormous, I know). So much clarity going on here though... #PracticeAsResearch #PracticeBasedResearch #obsidianMD #ArtisticResearch #phdlife

After yesterday's freak-out re the changes on Mozilla Hubs, I thought I should see if I can import my exported HAYDN SPACE OPERA scenes and make a version in Unity in case Hubs becomes inaccessible before I finish my PhD. Seems that Hubs doesn't export imported media tho - it's captured the objects that hold photos/videos, but not the photos/vids themselves. Also I've never used Unity before & probs need to do a tutorial. But yes, it imported. Yay. #practiceasresearch #phdlife
Realised in today's #writing that the 'documentation' I use in my portfolio pieces is almost exclusively from early in the composing process, rather than when I'm gluing things together. Need to think more about this, but maybe The Corridor in Haydn Space Opera could be somewhere I could explore this - might be the thing that I've felt is missing there and it feels appropriate to include bits from later in the process of making this piece. A good morning's work! #phdlife #practiceasresearch

Off to the Goldsmiths Music and Music and/as Process ‘Music and Interdisciplinary Practice’ study day today, where I’ll be talking about #interdisciplinarity & the composer’s #everyday in Quiet Songs. I’ll be looking at how I use practice documentation, video editing and gestures in this piece. Great speakers from the 2022 MAAP conference and I’m looking forward to meeting some Goldsmiths PhD students & hearing about their work too. #practiceasresearch #phdlife

Looking forward to working with Shakespeare's Globe on a Research in Action workshop in May. How were plays framed? How does a play's framing affect audience response? Who knows? Let's see what we find. Details here:

Haven't done many IRL things for a while so if you like this sort of stuff and are in/near London it would be great to see you!

Today I've been #writing about how individual works in the project use #documentation & how #interdisciplinarity - particularly combining multiple media in a single piece - can create a more complex & nuanced approach to rendering the private spaces of creation public. I've already shared the main works I've started writing about here - Quiet Songs and WALKS 1-4, so here's WALKS 5-8 (4mins):

A bit behind on updating my #notebooks website but volumes 11 & 12 are online now. Vol. 12 contains barely any #composition but quite a bit of ranting about computer (dis)repair things. A Composer's Real Life, eh? Well, it wouldn't be this dull if I made it up!
View By Volume: https://notebook.caitlinrowley.com/view-by-notebook/
Updates to View By Piece are automatic, so use the menu item for that to find updates on a particular piece (mostly A Memory of Wind)

Morning #writing is done. Today I've been writing about making the reflexive nature of composer-performer identity visible in "Quiet Songs". Nice to start to draw out muddled thoughts into (slightly) less muddled writing. #PracticeAsResearch #ArtisticResearch #PhDLife

No idea what I want to focus on today so in the meantime here’s a spread from one of my #alteredbook #composition #notebooks from November 2018. I was doing a series of drawings of cracks to help with thinking about the relationship between past/present, public/private and hiding/showing. The underlying volume is a (damaged copy of a) book about Benjamin Britten by Eric Walter White #practiceasresearch

This morning's #writing feels like so much absolute bollocks, but there could be something in it. Got to write it to see if it's real! Writing about how the form of 'The Apocalypse' in HAYDN SPACE OPERA reflects my mental processes of working in my notebooks.
