It seems to me that very few people in and in general (with the exception of ) use preprint services. Why is it so? Does anyone here use preprints? And if so, what archives do you use? Boosters appreciated 🙏

Holding in my hands the first printed issue of Pragmatics & Society that I ‘made’, and that says Daria Dayter - Editor-in-Chief.
Some big shoes to fill after a Jacob Mey. But today, academia feels alright!

Ability to detect paradoxical or illogical is good test for understanding.

Here's a subtle native speaker intuition I have about English:

You can send warm greetings or write a warm note. But you can only announce the greetings as warm to the recipient. Announcing a warm note like this comes off as presumptuous - how do you know it'll be received warmly?

This is perfectly fine package copy, but it did leave me scratching my head for a while: someone actually labeled a warm note as such?

When yes-means-no is so confusing that it needs to be spelled out explicitly: an example from German (, of course :))

In the first lecture of "Information Service Engineering" yesterday we were talking about the "Art of Understanding". What does it mean to "understand" and what does it really take to "understand"?

If I may self-advertise a little… Cambridge has just published two Elements with me as a co-author:
•Pragmatics in Translation
•Corpus Pragmatics

Both are open access and you can download them right now: cambridge.org/core/publication

Sometimes a single innocent sentence is enough to show that language is not language: "Sie sprechen die gleiche Sprache, englisch der eine, deutsch der andere." 'They speak the same language, English the one, German the other."
The German sentence comes from the liner notes to Peter Hammill's Offensichtlich Goldfisch, and "they" are Peter Hammill and Heinz Rudolf Kunze, and their same language should then I guess be music, which apparently you can speak in any language or something like that.
