Hours after confirming that the Chandrayaan-3 lander successfully performed a 'hop', Isro on Monday said the lander had slipped into sleep mode as intended. "Lander receivers are kept ON. Vikram will fall asleep next to Pragyan once the solar power is depleted and the battery is drained. Hoping for their awakening, around September 22," Isro said. Chandrayaan-3 project director P Veeramuthuvel told TOI: "The sleep command was initiated after the hop and redeployment of the payloads."

In a milestone, Pragyan, the Chandrayaan-3 rover has completed traversing more than 100 metres on the lunar surface and its instruments are continuing to send data. Just minutes after the Aditya-L1 mission was declared a success, Isro on Saturday said: “...Pragyan 100! Meanwhile, over the Moon, Pragan rover has traversed over 100 metres and is continuing.”

An additional instrument onboard the rover has now confirmed the presence of Sulphur (S) in the region, providing a tantalizing clue about the planet's geological history. The Alpha Particle X-ray Spectroscope (APXS), an advanced tool designed to analyze the elemental composition of Martian soil and rocks, has been instrumental in this discovery.

The Indian Space Reasearch Organisation (Isro) on Wednesday released another set of images of Chandrayaan-3's Vikram lander. The images were clicked by 'co-traveller Pragyan' on the lunar surface around 11am this morning. Earlier today, Isro had released the first photos of Vikram lander since its historic landing on August 23. They were taken by the Navigation Camera onboard the rover, Isro said.

Sulphur is a common element in the solar system, but it is rare on the Moon. So, its presence in the south pole region is thought to be a sign of the presence of water ice. Water ice is important because it could be a source of water for future human exploration of the Moon. It could also be used to produce fuel and oxygen for spacecraft. In addition, water ice could provide a habitat for microbes, which could have implications for the search for life beyond Earth.

A day after Chandrayaan-3 lander Vikram touched down on Moon’s south polar region, Isro on Thursday switched on the payloads on Vikram and started moving Pragyan, the rover, on the lunar surface. On why the rover took more than four hours to roll out, Isro chairman S Somanath told TOI: “After the landing, we had to check the inclination, terrain condition and temperatures, and wait for the lunar dust to settle. The rover came out late last night.”
