Ooo… I just found one of my absolute favourite photos from the trip. A perfect Alberta prairie foothills road. You can *just* see the Rockies in the haze in the distance. Near Madden, AB. I really do love the scenery of the Prairies. Just amazing.

The Michigan Lily (Lilium michiganense) is native to the Midwestern Prairies. I found this beauty at a south facing road side in a hilly Oak Savannah. We haven't had rain in over a week, so it's covered with a bit of dust from the road gravel.

(For those among you not familiar with the empty expanse of rural America - many smaller, low traffic roads are not finished with concrete or blacktop, but just gravel. If well maintained, they are easy enough to drive, but during the dry season each car can be tracked by the huge plume of dust it stirs up. Accordingly, roadside plants are often covered in fine dust).

One of the easiest plants to spot on the prairie - Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa). This showy plant is native to open and dry grasslands of much of North America, but is now popular in flower gardens worldwide. Like other members of its genus - and true to its common name - it is an insect favorite.

White Wild Indigo (Babtisia alba) stands out in the prairie, its inflorescences towering over the green. Like other legumes, this species forms symbioses with soil bacteria that turn inert nitrogen from the air into nutrients for their host plants. They live in small root nodules and help improve the soil over time.

I don't think it's a matter of vs. . It's that the , , , , population , and of are utterly what they are here in the .

2 years? Not possible here. If we wanted to replace 80% of ICE vehicles with BEVs, we need major electrical and upgrades. I'm it it started today, it would take 20 years.

I don't know where you are, but it's that easy here in the .

To replace a gas station than can refuel 100 cars/hour with that are capable of fast-charging (30mins) a 75 kWh pack, you need 50 at 150 kW each. And that's not accounting for the fact that charging is not 100% .

That's 7.5MW. If you're in that smallish town and call the power company and ask for a 7.5MW feed, they'll laugh and hang up.

With the dense from blanketing today, I've seen a bunch of comments from along the lines of "Wow, how bad must in be in Canada?"

This is counter-intuitive, but I'm in the Canadian . There are wildfires across northern , , and . And we haven't had any smoke here for weeks.

The smoke can go up into the , drift a long way, and then be pressed down to the ground again by a high-pressure system.

It isn't going to happen where I am anytime soon.

just aren't practical for some people here. I regularly do a trip where I drive ~300km, stay for five hours, and drive home again. In the winter, when it's -30C, and you're driving into a (minimum) 110km/h headwind, you need the heater on full blast, all the way.

An doesn't have a lot of waste heat to spare, so they need an . Heat pumps don't work at -30C either.
