I dedicate January to Prajnaparamita, "the Perfection of Wisdom" in Mahayana Buddhism. As the month comes to a close, I wanted to share what my January practice has looked like this year.

Śūnyatā
In #Madhyamaka: śūnyatā is a metaphysical dogma referring mainly to the nonexistence of self-creating dharmas. Non-existence is perversely hypostatised as "reality".
In #Prajñāpāramitā: śūnyatā is an epistemic term that refers to the absence of dharmas in samādhi. Absence is a matter of nonapprehension (as per early Buddhist sources).

In #Prajñāpāramitā, #emptiness turns dependent arising on it's head.
Emptiness arises when all conditions for sensory experience are absent. And if any condition for sensory experience is present then emptiness doesn't arise or, arisen, it ceases.
This being that does not become
This not being, that does become.

"it begins to look like Prajñāpāramitā was an old lineage of Buddhist practice, probably transmitted orally from guru to śiṣya, and thus underappreciated by those who focus solely on texts."-- conclusion in a forthcoming article
#buddhiststudies #prajnaparamita #history
In Aṣṭasāhasrikā we often find Elder Subhūti stating that he does not know, apprehend, or perceive a dharma.* We never see him debating the existence of dharmas, one way or the other.
* E.g. evam apy aham enān āyuṣman śāriputra dharmān na vedmi, nopalabhe, na samanupaśyāmi (Vaidya 1960: 178)
#buddhiststudies #buddhism #prajnaparamita
The insistence that dharmas don't exist forces proponents into the dualistic position of having one metaphysical explanation for experience and a completely different metaphysical explanation for reality. #buddhiststudies #twotruths #prajnaparamita

Since <Prajñāpāramitāhṛdaya> ostensibly copies from <Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā>, the pattern of differences between these two texts should be the central focus of research on the provenance of the Heart Sutra.
I'm constantly surprised by how controversial this statement is perceived to be.

In #academia, #Prajñāpāramitā is a largely closed subject. There is one, hegemonic view, to which everyone uncritically subscribes. Only a handful of people around the world are actively doing research on this literature. After 200 years we have few reliable editions, and no reliable translations. Which is to say (almost) *no progress*. #Buddhiststudies

I found it in a pinned post by jayarava’s:
https://tricycle.org/magazine/heart-sutra-history/
It’s a highly detailed article about a meditation/awareness (or maybe I should say “beyond focussed awareness”?) practise. Anyway, I’m curious what feedback scholars like jayarava would have about my “hot take”.😌

"Hṛd contains many expressions—such as avidyākṣayaḥ, tryadhvavyavasthitāḥ sarvabuddhāḥ, viharaty acittāvaraṇaḥ, aprāptitvāt, and mahāmantraḥ—which are found nowhere else in Prajñāpāramitā literature. These terms are paraphrases of real Buddhist terms such as avidyānirodhaḥ, atītānāgatapratyutpannā buddhāḥ, na kvacit sajjati, anupalambhayogena, and mahāvidyā." Edward Conze was openly racist and a misogynist. And mean-spirited about everyone else.
His editing was sloppy, his translations execrable, and his scholarship tendentious bordering on fraudulent (owing more to Swedenborg & Blavatsky than Prajñāpāramitā).

Re yǐwúsuǒdégù 以無所得故 in the Heart Sutra: Huifeng (2014) showed that it *always* translates anupalambhayogena; the back translation as aprāptitvāt was a mistake. Moveover, it *qualifies the negations* forcing us to stop reading them as metaphysical denials. Rather they reflect the epistemic fact of the absence of sense experience in śūnyatā-samādhi. #buddhiststudies #heartsutra #prajnaparamita

5,000 stone tablets inscribed with Buddhist texts were created at Fángshān 房山 from the 7th C - 17th C. They were stored in 5 artificial caves. A further 10,000 tablets were found buried (ca 11th C) in the precincts of the Yúnjū temple 雲居寺. Among them the oldest known Heart Sutra artefact, dated 顯慶六年二月八日 or 13 March 661 CE (image).

"The Heart Sutra is indeed—in every sense of the word—a Chinese text."
Jan Nattier (1992: 199). Independently confirmed by Huifeng (2014) and Attwood (2021).

[🙏🙏🙏 Prajnaparamita in 700 lines] Those who seek for the Tathagata should seek for the self. For “self” and “Buddha” are synonymous.
Goodnight everyone, take good care of yourself.
