Despite lower infant mortality, disparities in birth outcomes persist. In CA, rates of preterm delivery & low birthweight for infants of Black parents w/ the highest incomes are 1.5x greater than for those of white parents w/ the lowest incomes.

“I think this [distinction] is really important,” said Ashley Ward, director of the Heat Policy Innovation Hub at Duke University who was not involved in the study. “Most of the research around pregnant women has centered on acute events like a heat wave … but honestly, what we are all experiencing this summer is an excellent example of really what I would consider chronic heat exposure.”

"The studies...looked at the prevalence of birth complications caused by chronic hypertension, or high blood pressure, in pregnant women and the rates of complications from iron-deficiency anemia...The studies found that pregnant Black women had more than double the rate of both medical issues compared to pregnant white women. That led to higher rates of pre-eclampsia, hemorrhage and other complications during pregnancy that can be fatal."

A preeclampsia cure?
"Our study identifies cis P-tau as a crucial culprit and biomarker for preeclampsia."
“cis P-tau antibody efficiently depleted the toxic protein in the blood and placenta, and corrected all features associated with preeclampsia in mice….elevated blood pressure, excessive protein in urine and fetal growth restriction, among others, were eliminated and pregnancy was normal,"

Apparently I'm now "adjust your bike because belly gets in the way" weeks pregnant.
Which seems to be the same week as "4 km bike ride with kids is a workout".
Is it still a human? Homo sapiens?
They seem to be doing this to study the early phases of #pregnancy and prevent #miscarriages, but this is really a small step away from really serious and morally questionable actions.

People forget that a significant proportion of known pregnancies (10-20%) end in miscarriage (and much higher for older mothers and those with previous miscarriages). It’s simply not true that every abortion, if prevented, leads to a baby. Sure, abortion ends the potential for a life, but we all know that. It’s a potential life, not (yet) a person. #abortion #pregnancy #abortionrights

The *holds nose* government is potentially doing something right by launching a survey for women in England only covering the reproductive system. Whether you've been pregnant or not, want to be or not, if you have first hand experience of female reproductive matters then why not add your views and experiences and express your preferences?

“This isn’t an issue about abortion,” said Dr. Stella Dantas, the president-elect of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. “This is an issue about access to comprehensive obstetric and gynecologic care.
When you restrict access to care that is based in science, that everybody should have access to — that has a ripple effect.”

"in red states like #Texas, #Oklahoma and #Tennessee, obstetricians — including highly skilled #doctors who specialize in handling complex and risky pregnancies — are leaving their practices...
The departures may result in new maternity care deserts...
The effects are particularly pronounced in rural areas...
Restrictive abortion laws, experts say, are making that problem much worse."

Vital info…must read! #union #abortion #pregnancy
“The attack on abortion rts is at its core an attack on working people. Poor people are more than 5X’s as likely to face an unwanted pregnancy, & Black women in the US are almost 3X’s more likely to die during pregnancy than women of another race. Forced parenthood traps families into lifetimes of poverty & trauma…& unsurprisingly, the states that have moved most swiftly to restrict abortion rts…” 1/2⬇️
Fun with forms: filling out the intake form for the hospital I'd like* to give birth in. One question is "how long did the births of previous children take?"
I do sincerely wonder if ANYONE can answer that in a way that's remotely useful for them. I certainly can't.
*well, not "like" like, I'd like to not be in the hospital for that, but it's the option I chose.
Realized my wife is due next week 😳
I thought we had 9 months 😭🤯
