'Using mammalian cells in culture, we discovered that they adapt to chronic mild stresses of up to two weeks, notably proteotoxic stresses such as heat, by increasing their size and translation, thereby scaling the amount of total protein.'

Is the lack of published non-significant results the fault of reviewers and editors refusing to publish them, or do researchers refuse to even write such results up? Interesting article using pre print servers to suggest the latter is the explanation… newthingsunderthesun.com/pub/s

Very interesting. Sequence-function relation is expected to be simpler than often expected, according to the preprint. I'd love to see comments or reviews on this one.

Presenting a model for proteasome condensate formation in which shuttle factors play a critical role. ↔ 💧

Kenrick Waite and team show that shuttling factors Rad23 and Dsk2 contribute to the localization of proteasomes in condensates - a process that Ddi1 counteracts.

RecRec: Algorithmic Recourse for Recommender Systems arxiv.org/pdf/2308.14916.pdf ML models underlying are often opaque, making it difficult for users, content providers, and developers to understand why certain recommendations are made.

To address this problem, this paper proposes a recourse framework for recommender systems. A recourse is a set of actions that, if executed, would modify the recommendations (or ranking) of an item in the desired manner.

'Here, we reveal that gut commensal bacteria can translocate directly to the brain when mice are fed an altered diet that causes dysbiosis and intestinal permeability, and that this also occurs without diet alteration in distinct murine models of neurological disease. The bacteria were not found in other systemic sites or the blood, but were detected in the vagus nerve.'

New on @sortee's EcoEvoRxiv, looking at the genetic variance in group size, which is tricky conceptually as it is a trait shared among many individuals. Using an indirect genetic effects framework, I suggest genetic variance should be high and therefore group size highly evolvable: doi.org/10.32942/X2S30S
