"Flaming June," Frederic Leighton, 1895.

I love the Pre-Raphaelites. This is Leighton's most famous painting, based loosely on a Michelangelo sculpture of "Night." Leighton struggled to get the pose just right, and make her limbs look naturally situated, and it finally came together after many sketches.

Ophelia, by John Everett Millais. This painting was achieved by getting the model, Lizzie Siddal, to lie in a bath of water gathered from the Thames. Lizzie caught a terrible chill and almost died. Tragically, her doctor prescribed laudanum, leading to a lifelong addiction. In contrast, I admire the work of the #PreRaphaelites and their followers. I love Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Millais, John Collier, Arthur Hughes, James Tissot, Anthony Sandys.

If I have to choose just one, the most beloved, it is undoubtedly John William Waterhouse. Many consider him follower of the Pre-Raphaelites, but he belonged to classicism and was a member of the Academy of Arts. 🖤
