We hear very little about #TeddyWilson who easily crossed that big band to small group divide that survived into the bebop era. Influential pianist (#LennieTristano and #BudPowell clearly listened). Often the pillar behind #Pres #LesterYoung & #BillieHoliday. Superb in his own right. (I used to play 🎷 with a very gifted pianist in Portsmouth, Lots John Russell. Sounded a lot like Teddy. We’d duet. But unreliable due to alcohol. Died too young of related complications.

Until #Coltrane it’s possible to conceive of the jazz tenor #saxophone as essentially tributaries around two massive, distinct deltas: #ColemanHawkins, the rabble-rouser & Lester ‘The President’ or ‘Pres’ Young ⬇️. #Pres, #BillieHoliday’s friend, mentor & favourite sax player, defined a largely cross-accenting, vibrato-less style focusing on phrasing rather than timbre to determine improvisation approach. #LesterYoung, from which 2 significant tributaries #LeeKonitz & #WarneMarsh (=> #MarkTurner)
