This might be or just erm , I guess?

Anyway, lectures are great and I would be interested if there is evidence they don't work. I can't find any and I have had a fair look.

There are some things to look out for.

1) Most narrative reviews or articles with advice are not based on research but rather opinion. Yes, there are ways to research this stuff.

Look, you don't need people to turn their cameras on.

I've been speaking in public for 24 years - you cannot tell what an audience is thinking by looking at them.

Newsreaders, YouTubers, politicians - lots of people - speak to cameras without seeing their audience. It's a crutch you can learn to live without. (Not to mention means cameras aren't necessarily helpful.)

You *do* need them on for group work but this is not the same thing.

Well!

last night's post has had a bit of traction!

the "argh" flowchart

(which isn't mine BTW - I found it years ago on some web site - sorry no attribution available)

more to the point, this is the second time in a week that my notifications have registered 40+

last week it was the one about Zelensky's debating skills

looks like and do the trick

Learning styles...aren't a thing.

But let's pretend they are a thing. As a presenter, what are you going to do?

You can't determine the learning styles of your audience. Even if you could, it's probably a mixture. Given it's a mixture, as a presenter, it's impossible to cater for every style.

One of the challenges of educational evidence is it frequently compares two teaching modalities without minimum standards one of the modalities, usually the control group.

Questions.

Ever had a lecturer ask a question to an audience to be met with awkward silence?

Two options:
1) let people discuss it in groups for 1-2 minutes then ask the groups (consider asking a series of questions)
2) use the rule of thumb of 8 seconds (count it out "Mississippilly" in your head - if you don't feel awkward you've not waited long enough)

"Educational theory is boring."

Somewhat blowing my own trumpet, here is some feedback on a presentation I did to some F2 doctors. I am the "first guy" and did their educational theory session.

I guess this is a account - if people find it boring, it's because you made it boring. Explain to them what *you* find fascinating.

(All feedback not pertaining to me has been removed as I haven't asked permission to share it.)

Use time limits, not slide limits.

This is an exported video of a single slide in PowerPoint. I'm happy to send people the original slide. It is only one slide.

If you want to limit information in a series of presentations, time limits are the only way to do it.

Just say it!

Sadly he's not on Mastodon but Oliver Lovell's Cognitive Load Theory In Action is a superb primer on how we learn and should be mandatory for educators.

I've tooted about redundancy before but it's crucial. If you're going to say something, don't put it on the slides.

Text is the enemy; it reduces what audiences remember.

Just say it!

It's kind of weird. I've been posting tips for the last couple of weeks and I don't feel I could do that on Twitter. I was worried it would just be arguments.

Anyway, having seen lots of super-flashy slides on TikTok recently - yeah, they look great but they're a waste of time.

Figure out your message, what you're going to say, how you'll structure it, logistics and ergonomics *then* get to how you'll annotate your talk with slides.
