Ich hab kürzlich auch den PressReader über die #Stadtbücherei #Würzburg kennen gelernt und ausprobiert.

Ich bin von der Auswahl der Zeitungen doch sehr ernüchtert. Ich nehme das als sehr konservativ wahr. Kann den #PressReader nicht weiterempfehlen und würde der Stadtbib auch raten, das Geld besser auszugeben. 🙁

I’ve seen a few posts over the last couple of weeks about how to get away from the #Amazon environment. Many #mastodon users are likely already people who have fled from one evil empire or another. ;-)

I too have been trying to remove myself from Amazons ecosystem as much as possible over the last year, especially since a lot of my reading was done via #Audible and #Kindle and my reviews through #Goodreads

#StoryGraph , A bit less cluncky than Goodreads and has an app that works, some insightful stats and graphs about your reading habits, and certainly better recommendations. And unlike Goodreads, this is being improved continuously

My favourite Kindle alternative: #KOBO

Almost all the books Amazon Kindle has as well, plus that one especially nice feature that Kobo devices have #OverDrive built right in — allowing you to check out free library #ebooks directly from your device.

And touching on that last Overdrive bit, check with your library where you have access to. Via my #Maribyrnong #Libraries I have access to #PressReader (Thousands of Newspapers and Magazines) #BorrowBox and #Libby (ebooks for e-readers) and even to the Library Edition of #TheAge

@tulpa How about magazines? (Depends on your geo location). You can use your local public library card to register #Libby and #PressReader , and there are countless world-wide magazines to read online

Just found out last night while I was using the Libby library app on my tablet that there is also PressReader, and that I can put my library card info and get a catalogue of newspapers and magazines in it!

It lays out the magazines/newspapers brilliantly and has a way for me to read the entire article (newspapers often have articles split over on several pages).

The text to speech system needs a little bit of work though... 🥴

@mutchkins Für SZ, Spiegel, Stern gibt es https://blendle.com/home . Früher gab es dort deutlich mehr regionale Zeitungen. Ansonsten schau‘ doch mal in der lokalen Bibliothek. Die @stadtbuechereien_duesseldorf bietet beispielsweise #pressreader mit Rheinischer Post, Tagesspiegel, Neue Westfälische, etc. an.

Ich habe mir gerade online einen Zugang zum Verbund der Öffentlichen Bibliotheken Berlins (#VÖBB) geholt, mir die #PressReader-App auf dem Tablet installiert und kann jetzt bei Berliner Regenwetter gemütlich auf der Couch den #TagesSpiegel lesen. Außerdem die #WahingtonPost und das #WallStreetJournal. Und den #Guardian. #LeFigaro ebenfalls. Und und und. Ich bin begeistert!

I figured out how to associate your Milwaukee Public Library account with your PressReader account, so that you can just use the app like normal without any restrictions. Since it's just an OCRed copy of the physical paper, it's still a weird experience, though.

... So, apparently your Milwaukee County Federated Library System card gets your free access to #PressReader. That is very good to know.

Anyone out there using PressReader? I just got my annual "Your subscription will renew soon" for the Washington Post and I'm wondering if $29/mo might be better than having subscriptions to all the things.
