“Hail the Conquering Hero” (1944) — Preston Sturges’ final film in his brilliant stretch at Paramount in the early 1940s. Exquisite combination of screwball antics, biting social and political satire, sentimentality and a dash of wartime patriotism. This is Sturges at the peak of his craft.

Twenty-three years after scoring the winning touchdown for his college football team mild-mannered Harold Diddlebock, who has been stuck in a dull, dead-end book-keeping job for years, is let go by his pompous boss, advertising tycoon J.E. Tonight, for the first time in ages, we caught Preston Sturges’ HAIL THE CONQUERING HERO at NYC's Film Forum. It struck us as remarkable that Georgia Caine, who played Eddie Bracken's warm, loving mom in the film, also portrayed Barbara Stanwyck's bitter, hateful mother in REMEMBER THE NIGHT.

Here's our annual pitch for the official Christmas movie of Cladrite Radio: REMEMBER THE NIGHT (1940), written by the great Preston Sturges and starring Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray,
airing tonight at 8 p.m. ET. This picture has it all: comedy, drama, sentimentality, romance, nostalgia (even back in its day) and one of the hardest-hitting emotional scenes in movie history (you'll know it when you see it). A must-see.

Now watching: ‘The Lady Eve’, dir. Preston Sturges, 1941.

“Are you an adventuress?”

“Of course I am. All women are. They have to be. If you waited for a man to propose to you from natural causes, you'd die of old maidenhood.”

3 things about Preston Sturges' THE LADY EVE [1941]

1. “But then she must be very, very … ?”
“Oh, very!”
2. Covered in roast and pan drippings.
3. Mr. Murgatroyd.

THE LADY EVE just gets better every time I see it. The double (and triple!) entendres he pulls off, you couldn't even attempt today. This is now a Preston Sturges stan account. "Oh, go peel an eel!"

Porter Hall looks at stars Betty Hutton and Eddie Bracken in the Preston Sturges comedy “Miracle of Morgan’s Creek” (1944).

For me, this has got to be one of the funniest movies ever made.
