I'm glad I left Tucson for Oaxaca, but I do miss this time of year. It is blisteringly hot there, but the cactus are flowering in all their prehistoric glory.

Prickly Pear Cactus, upriver from Parker, Arizona.

A lot of desert mountain was blasted to build β€œthe bypass,” a highway to route impatient drivers around the congested area paralleling the Colorado River. There are many wide places you can safely park a car, and then scale the man-made cliff face, and take a short walk to find vast desert vistas that most of the people below don't know exist.

Saw this on my morning walk & thought some folks might find it interesting. The white material on this pad hides a couple cochineal bugs, parasitic scale . These are the source of the natural dye carmine. You probably ate some today. When I was a kid, my dad demonstrated by squishing one of those spots releasing a bright red fluid. I didn't have to do that - I hate squishing insects that don't seem to be bothering anyone.

Dear friends,
This is a prickly pear cactus growing at a beach on the Long Island Sound. Such an amazing plant. They are tenacious and wise in their habitat choices. They're not rare here, but not as common as they should be. The orange tinged edges are a product of the low angle, backlit, sunset lighting.
