Posted a scan of the December, 1941 issue of Contemporary Japan: A Review of Far Eastern Affairs to Internet Archive:

archive.org/details/contempora

This is the last issue released before Japan’s invasion of Southeast Asia and attack on Pearl Harbor. Some mention of tensions and negotiations, but strange to read this issue in the light of what is unfolding soon after it goes to press.

Posted a scan of the November, 1941 issue of Contemporary Japan: A Review of Far Eastern Affairs to Internet Archive:

In this issue there is an article “China, United or Disunited” by former diplomat Yonayama Tsuneo that provides a good example of the delusional thinking in wartime Japan about China. 1/

Among the articles in this issue is another article by Thomas Baty on “Patriotism” in which he attempts to argue that “Patriotism is an amiable hobby with the Occidental: religion an individual fancy with the Japanese. Each has his own object of absolute surrender.”

Among the articles in this issue is “Safeguarding French Indo-China” which attempts to both depict Japan as a defender of French empire in Indochina and make the case that it is simultaneously contributing to the creation of its anti-colonial vision of co-prosperity in Asia. 1/

Posted a scan of the July, 1941 issue of Contemporary Japan: A Review of Far Eastern Affairs to Internet Archive:

July, 1941
archive.org/details/contempora

Among the articles in this issue is one on Japanese “juvenile stories” and “juvenile art” by Christian children’s author Koide Shōgo (小出正吾 1897-1990). He closes the piece by tracing, without criticism, the rise of nationalism in youth literature, but this seems a sad contrast to some of his own award winning stories.

Articles include an exploration of castle building in Japan and the history of Japanese war literature. However, it also includes one of several pieces in the journal by the interesting international legal scholar Thomas Baty. 1/

In the next week or two, I'll will be scanning over thirty issues of "Contemporary Japan: A Review of Eastern Affairs" that I found on Ebay and posting them to the Internet Archive. As I share them here, I'll try to find time to point out some interesting articles of not along the way. Another great source for students: a mix of wartime analysis from a pro-Japanese perspective to deconstruct and cultural articles about Japan, including some familiar names.

I've scanned some more wartime Japanese propaganda pamphlets and posted to Internet Archive. Because they are in English, they can be useful to give students in my Japanese Imperialism module a taste of the kinds of justifications and patterns of logic used by pro-Japanese writers in wartime.

In WWII, the US War Department's collection of language phrase books proliferated signficantly. I found a copy of the 1944 Korean phrase book that must have come in handy when US forces showed up on the peninsula in September, 1945. US forces were infamously ill equipped to engage with Korean locals, depending a lot on Japanese interpreters and Japanese speaking Koreans. Posted to IA:

Today I just want a share a few of the fun and random things I have stumbled on at @internetarchive lately. First up, over a dozen issues of "Mujeres Libres" - an anarchist women's magazine from Spain (1936-1939) published through the civil war. archive.org/search?query=creat

I found another Malay language textbook for Chinese speakers in a used bookstore in Singapore from 1956. Looks like it may have been published in Penang, Federation of Malaya. I have scanned and posted to Internet Archive:

In 1960 Radio Singapore broadcast a series of Malay language lessons. I found two volumes of the textbooks that accompanied the broadcast in an used bookstore. I have scanned and put them on the Internet Archive.

If anyone wants to work on their cursive Chinese writing, you might consult this old 1955 book published in Hong Kong that I found in less than great condition in a flea market here in Singapore. Scanned and posted to internet archive:

I continue to be fascinated by old Malay language textbooks for Chinese speakers. Here is another one from 1959. I scanned and put on IA. The book included two added slips from owner. One was a newspaper snippet, but the other a typed vocab list of vocab including words like "gengster" (私會黨). But has "banyak" (many) listed as "very busy" (很忙), isn't that a mistake?
