“The Shocking Lessons Of History Everyone Has Forgotten”
Niall Ferguson interviewed by Chris Williamson on Modern Wisdom. Parallels b/w the history of the #PrintingPress and #Internet at the 32 minute mark #mastodon users should absorb. The down sides of hyper connectedness when everybody has access.

This week's print: An actual, working* printing press from https://openpressproject.com/
*Functionality yet to be tested
The printing press, credited to the German inventor and printer Johannes Gutenberg (l. https://www.worldhistory.org/article/2039/the-printing-press--the-protestant-reformation/ #History #Counter-Reformation #MartinLuther #PrintingPress

Doing some research so I can write more about a #Medieval era #PrintingPress in this #DarkFantasy setting, and I'm always surprised to be reminded that we don't have a lot of information on the early history of the printing press.
Let that sink in for a moment. The thing that spread all the knowledge, the number one source of #history's record after it's creation, and we have no idea what it even looked like: it was 50 years before someone even drew one in a text that survived.

#Mastodon is just another letter of protestation on the door of the church.
Legible by more and more every day because a couple decades ago, somebody went and updated the #printingpress.
Today, the lay people are beginning to learn how to make their own #internets, en masse.
Now that it's dawning on people that the #internet probably shouldn't be run entirely by #billionaires, I expect more letters to appear on more church doors.
Good going internetworked-humans, keep up #reformation2.0

J'avais envie de faire une petite impression typo poétique et romantique à souhait mais à un moment dans le processus mes convictions anti polices ont débarqué... Probablement dès le tout début 😜

Ça vous dit, des linos militantes imprimées sur une vieille presse à herbier?

How about some activist linocuts printed on an old herbarium press?

I'm old enough to remember the pushback in #education against electronic #calculator (i still have my sliderule), against laptops, and am watching the same with #AI
But I love the idea that even in the 15th century, there was pushback against the #printingpress because of the fear it would lead to the spread of heretical ideas
Six centuries later, turns out that those fears were well founded - https://www.pbs.org/newshour/arts/book-ban-attempts-reach-record-high-in-2022-american-library-association-report-says

Asking “about AI and how it will impact ... well everything, but particularly the economy” in 2023 is great - it’s like asking about impact of the #printingpress in 1550 or the #SteamEngine in 1775.
And it’s a very #chatgpt like question - very comtemporary - let’s see what answers come up.

Back in Dec, I 3D printed a tiny printing press using files from https://openpressproject.com
Today I finally tested it out. I used a small piece of milk carton for the plate, and just used a nail as my tool to scratch in the design. It turned out better than I expected. Excited to try more with it!
So, apparently, there's a boardgame called Gutenberg.

1 point in particular in @mkirschenbaum review of the #Gutenberg game that stood out for me was the anachronism of the gear symbolism.
This reminds me of an argument by Klaus W. Gerhardt that I encountered when I first studied #BookHistory: Why was the wooden #PrintingPress not fundamentally changed for 350 years? Early artisanal printers saw the press as a tool, a stable thing. Only modern figures, with an engineering mentality, viewed it as a machine, to be radically altered & improved

One of my favorite historical religious events is the #Beeldenstorm aka the #IconoclasticFury.
After the #printingpress allowed mass distribution of the #Bible in common language, #tracts and religious #polemics became common. In the mid #16thCentury #Protestants rose up against all the pervasive #Catholic #idolatry and church wealth. They stormed churches throughout the #HolyRomanEmpire, tearing down idols.

Before the #PrintingPress there were #Scriptoriums.
“This late 15th-century miniature of Jean Miélot (died 1472) depicts the author at work writing his compilation of the ''Miracles of Our Lady'', one of his many popular works.”
