When the most privacy-respecting service is the least popular & mostly unheard of, it means the privacy advice sites are not doing their job. They all continue to endorse a syndicate. It’s pitiful. They¹ should be embarrassed to still be standing behind . 1. ssd.eff.org securitycheckli.st @markosaric

@ademalsasa The 1st 3 are quite poor recommendations. , , & actually endorse privacy abusing svcs. It's well documented here: lemmy.ml/post/31487 here: lemmy.ml/post/32542 & here: lemmy.ml/post/35452 There are also threads in their bug trackers where serious issues w/endorsements are simply ignored. They just want donations.

@celia @klaatu @dsfgs Projects that exist for the purpose of privacy and avoidance (e.g. , ) have chosen and .com for their own projects, and this I find most revolting: lemmy.ml/post/35452

Fun fact: .com is a service of agency (in-q-tel), which is where fled to after Microsoft bought . Yeah, the anti- project has less of an issue with an anti-Tor platform of Google working with spooks than MS. iqt.org/portfolio?&taxonomy=te

@Mr_Teatime A *lot* of consumers take the selfish angle of accepting an unethical supply chain, particularly in the case of DDG. These discussions always have those who say "who cares if DDG finances a privacy abuser, so long as my search is private". Astonishingly, this attitude is strong on the project, who says: "Help make mass surveillance of entire populations uneconomical!"

@janriemer@mastodon.technology @alf You can also see extreme loyalty manifest in a discussion, where devs are committed to privacy but their loyalty to has a strangehold to the point where they ignore the facts & not only refuse to delist it, they continue endorsing w/out warning users of issues: web.archive.org/web/2021022714

@UmWerker the problem with DDG using MS both for hosting and for searching is that MS can link both sides of DDG traffic together to see who is searching for what. I don't get why there is no loud criticism of this. Sites people naively trust like , , continue to endorse DDG and neglect to warn users of this.

@mpanhans @strypey Certainly more projects like this are needed. The existing projects (, , ) screw it up by recommending alternatives that are counter productive: dev.lemmy.ml/post/31487 Avoid their mistakes by gathering input from experts & staying true to the mission.
