With you 100% on this. Data portability is a problem. I’m not sure how much of the blame for that is attributable to the ActivityPub protocol vs. implementations like Mastodon.

I’ve been on nodes that spontaneously lock users out, after which there is no way for users to reach their data. They just pull the plug & walk away. Or they join the gian oppressive of Cloudflare (e.g. social. .io) w/out notice.

Well, you still only need to protect your master-password, but you get the added benefits of a based service without any data actually being in the cloud.

You can generate your passwords on any device, because only you know the master-password, email and URL of the services you use.

So no different than normal password managers that actually sync over the internet. This is actually more secure.

There are some solutions that I am still looking into, that basically use your master-password and the URLs to generate the OTPs.

Thus, everything is generated and offline, nothing is stored in the cloud. So you can safely logout of the and even uninstall it. When you get to the other side, you can just download it and log in and have access again.

This way, if they inspect your phone, there will be no evidence of the existence. Some also use this idea for randomly generated passwords.

The problem is, they can force you to handover the yubikey and password. Thus, making it useless in this case.

The best is, to have a clean laptop and a good encrypted solution.

But that's my problem with this. Basically, if they take my phone they get access to my and ! Which shows all of my services that I use and also provides unlimited access.

Getting away from companies in order to protect my own has been very difficult. Over the last year I have completed the process many have termed "deGoogling" your life on r/privacy.

It was definitely I massive challenge, first starting with my and providers and slowly move over all of my apps to and respecting alternatives.

But one thing that I have noticed, is that these alternatives are often quite extensive when it comes to features which can make them overly complicated for people that just want their privacy back but keep it simple.

I just found this solution, made by a small team of developers. They released a suite of apps that are normally on your phone, but kept is simple for you.

All of the apps are and

"Several countries now created a legal foundation labelled as Key disclosure laws to compromise information privacy by requiring individuals to surrender cryptographic keys to law enforcement. Failure to disclose passwords to keys and result of several years in jail depending on the country"

Thus, for your own you need to hide any possible evidence of any personal data on your computer prior to traveling.

The best possible solution for this is encrypted cloud storage, because you can be forced to unlock your laptop and decrypt any data physically on it.

"A random data security search by Border Force officers can get you detained for an uncertain amount of time, all of your devices seized, forced to surrender passwords to bypass your encryption and your digital files inspected, copied and saved. In the US, data gets saved for 15 years in a database searchable by thousands of U.S. Customs and Border Protection employees without a warrant. The data includes messages, private photos, contacts, social media posts, medical and financial information, internet browsing history, call logs."

"Even if you'd argue that "I have nothing to hide" it should be clear now that this is a highly invasive procedure and a mockery of your privacy. Keep in mind that these searches can be completely random and without suspicion of a crime."

How is this even possible? That no warrant is any possible reason is required? This would require you to basically back-up and wipe your laptop before traveling!

Phone and Laptop Seizures at Airports and Borders - Privacy Travel Guide

"Border agents have the upper hand, you can be detained and your devices seized. Key disclosure laws make it legal to force you to surrender your passwords and biometric access. Back up your devices, use encrypted cloud storage, wipe and factory reset your device, create new travel accounts, restore your devices when you reach a safe network."

This is just insane.

Privacy nerd reading:
This is an extremely readable, but long, read on different technologies to protect privacy and who is using which tools to break privacy.
Even the math is pretty easy to follow.

For real, turn App Privacy Report on. I guarantee you’ll be shocked at how many third party domains the apps on your device are contacting.

This is the result of opening the ABC News app a single time and clicking through to a single story.

I work there and some of this surprised me.

@epixoip @sc00bz excellent write-up thanks. I myself loved and defended and even paid for my first year when they stopped their tier. But 2 months before my first year ended, I discovered at privacytools.io and started takiny my privacy more seriously.

It was at this time that I decided on and have been usinh it since. I am very satisfied with and actually noticed that ads on actually became less accurate and targeted just because I switched away from .

I now feel more secure and private and enjoy their service and the transparency that they provide.

So I’ve had in my bio for so long, because when I joined, there were weird follow bots you had to opt out of.

There was also a super annoying bot that would reply any time you posted a link that was behind cloudflare

What the recent controversy has shown is that we should absolutely Push Back against these services requiring us to personally opt out.

@cambridgeport90 @obsolete29 Indeed in 2 out of 2 cases I was fucked over by admins pulling the plug on a Mastodon node w/out warning. The / project is run by absolute rat bastards, probably pissed off at each other during their infighting feud & someone at some point decided “fuck all these users”. It’s a serious pitfall that has this .
