L’auteur de 76 ans, entré à l'Académie Goncourt en 2008 (onze ans après en avoir remporté le prix), la quitte pour raison de santé invoquée, alors qu’il s'était montré exceptionnellement divisé lors de l’attribution du Goncourt à Brigitte Giraud.
