Predictions are hard, especially about the future. There is a trick that helps make more confident predictions and intuitively we all use it to some degree. The main idea is to use "conditional" thinking. Conditioning on X having happened at some future time T, what else is likely to have happened?

This forces us to uncover possible causation chains (Cause and effect phenomena are essential for prediction to make any sense - otherwise its just a sequence of random tosses). But the answer is seldom unique. So besides X, we need to build a picture of all other things {Y} that are consistent with X up to time T.

This exercise doesnt assign a probability on X so how does it help at all? Its divide and conquer. Focusing on Y instead of X becomes the new problem to solve. This may help in various ways. E.g, if you discover that conditioning on X requires in most scenarios a Y that is is extremely unlikely then this constraints the likelihood of X as well.

So an interesting day with the selections from this morning.

We got the hit I expected, but the loss was covered by the other losers.

With the odds I got matched at, I ended up 0.75 points in profit on the day. So happy with the overall position considering the one hit we had.

Interestingly, the worst performer today was the horse I thought was the most overpriced. And the horse I thought had was too big a price went and won (our hit).

Food for thought.
