Some characters say more stuff if you talk to them again. I considered showing an icon when someone has more to say. This works well, but I think I'll skip it in this game since the extra text tends to be optional to the story and can be a fun discovery.
Finished cutting these songs into clean loops and encoding them as mp3's for the game editor. I use a program called mp3loop to resample them very slightly and encode the mp3's in a way that allows them to loop seamlessly without the audible gap you'd normally get.
Dragon Quest VI from the SNES seems to have a lot of thematically useful music. It even has some leit motif which gives many songs similar melodies, making them seem to belong together. Could be useful. RPG's tend to have a useful variety of musical themes.
Incidentally, Addams Family Values on the SNES has WAY better music than you would expect considering how primitive the game looks. Impressively well composed music and very moody.
Then I clip out a loop for each song and sometimes an intro as well, and convert those into MP3's for the RPG Maker to use.
I pick the best ones out of the possibilities and copy their shortcuts out of that folder. Then a open the original songs and export them to WAV files. If it's a midi song I usually replace the instruments with a better sound-font like "Musica_Theoria_v2"
โฆThen I drag shortcuts of the various songs, label them with their moods, and place them into a "possibilities" folder. Then I compare them to each other to figure out which ones work best and sound best together.
I usually make a list of moods for the scenes in the game. Then I look for music that conveys those moods.
Browsing through music from old obscure SNES games looking for background music for this little game. That's my usual approach. Maybe I'll find something good I haven't used yet.
Now that I've named that game, I can tell you about another little project I just finished working on. It's something super nerdy and technical so I'll just rapid-fire all the tweets I was saving all at once so you can see how it progressed. Twitter will hate me.
Now I can stop spamming you with the same picture over and over to imply which new project I'm talking about, In retrospect maybe I should have just used the project's dumb working title "princess hypno-king"
I also needed to figure out a name so that I can start posting about other new projects here.
The plot's basically done. So it's time to figure out what to call this game. I had a bunch of possible names, but I think this one has a good tease-factor. I wanted to imitate this clever logo silhouette, but then noticed a clever shape in a font called Devinne Swash
But now I have to add all the damn AUDIO! I hate that part. I have to play through every part of the game again to check every scene in order to add the right sounds everywhere that one might be needed. Repeating stuff is boring.
I think I showed everything I wanted to in the ending. Practically all of it's optional. But then again, players aren't used to skipping content. It's a habitual mindset one gets from playing purely reward-driven games.
Ending is off to a great start. The story needed a change of pace so I added a culture with a quirky but detailed philosophy. Just need to be careful not to overdo this or it'll overstay its welcome. The end needs to be interesting, explain the story, then stop.
I added a magical character, figured out her motives, and how all this tries into the backstory. This pretty much ties up the loose ends. Now I just need to sprinkle details about this character and situation across the existing story to make it blend.
Came up with a pretty interesting ending situation. But there are still a few half-baked details to flesh out, like how the hypnosis power is possible.
