Okay….I am a little behind.
Regarding my classroom, I have Wipebooks up around the room. These are basically whiteboards on chart paper, and are in addition to the whiteboards at the front of the room. I have students work at them a few days a week. Our middle school is on rotation, and I share my classroom with another teacher (she does not teach math). This means that I don’t really leave anything on my desk because it is a shared space. However….I always use the same pen for grading, which is the Z-Grip Flight.
On the first day of school I want my students to feel comfortable and at ease. I don’t have anything specific that I say, but I try to share the sentiment that I love math and the goal is to have fun together.
Back to school nightmares are always a thing. I already had my first one and school doesn’t start until the first week in September! They vary, but usually contain themes of being late to school or students not listening to me.

I've been retired for ten years, and I still have the occasional teacher nightmare. Three versions:

1. I can't get to school on time because of traffic, or GPS issues, or my bike is stolen, etc.

2. I do get to school, but they've changed everything around and I can't find my classroom.

3. I find my classroom, but I have no lesson plan whatsoever, so I wing it, but the students will not acknowledge my presence or answer my questions, etc.

I just had my first back-to-school nightmare last night, and it was very realistic because it was related to what I typically do each day.
Almost all of my back-to-school nightmares have to do with me running late, very late, on my first day of school or having nothing planned and panicking.
This particular one I had to drop off my son and his carpool friend at middle school in the morning, a 30 minute round trip, then drop my 3 year old daughter off at daycare, all before getting myself to school, and freaking out because school was beginning in about 10 minutes and we hadn't even left the house yet!

School starts next week! I went to school last Thursday and was able to get a lot done, even with no a/c, but I need to go back to finish.

I am seriously contemplating adding a hallway element similar to Sara VanDerWerf's post here: saravanderwerf.com/even-if-the

Has anyone else tried this in the hallway? Any ideas or suggestions?

@samjshah I have back to school nightmares and haven’t had a regular classroom in 10 years 🤨 They are about not being able to find the room, not having a roster, finding myself assigned a new prep at the last minute, kids acting wild and everything I try not working…

Here are some items on my desk. Foster kid picked out the Kermit as a gift for me at a comic book store.. He also tried to buy the colored cube with own money for me at an art museum. He didn't have enough money, but the money he tried to use was from his birthday. The cube is glass so that colors mix from different angles. The red banner in the back is a Cincinnati Reds banner I bought at Cooperstown.

See @samjshah for the prompt I am responding to.

One thing on my desk which brings me joy is a picture frame shaped like the Tardis. A class of students gave me this. When you open the Tardis doors, it reveals a picture of me and the class on a field trip we took — and they photoshopped in David Tennant as the 10th Doctor. It was so great. They knew I was a huge fan. Every year students enjoy opening the little doors and asking if David Tennant was really there with us. 😍

Okay, I think I have an easy answer for question 3 too [3. What’s the very first thing you say to your new students on the very first day?]. I don't always start class like this, but very usually, I'll say something like this:

"Hihihi! I'm SO glad to be here, and I'm so excited to get to know all of you. And nervous because I'm just always nervous at the start of the new year -- lots of new people to meet and lots of things to do! We'll have a lot of time to get to know each other over the next few weeks. But today, I want to dive right in with my favorite thing: doing math!" [And then I have some activity/problem/etc. that gets kids thinking, collaborating, etc.]

I have to think about some of these questions -- but for question 2, I do have an immediate answer. [2. Do you have something on your desk that you absolutely love? A stamp that says “Show your work!” or a framed letter from a student or an organizer you can’t live without or a special set of grading pens you love? Share, please!]

Of course my desk is filled with colorful random things that make me happy -- notes, photos, etc. But at the end of summer last year, I made a VISION BOARD filled with things that had previously brought me joy in teaching. Because of the pandemic, I had lost those things. So I sat down and brainstormed "what are concrete things I loved to do that can bring me back some joy?"

I made this board because of these folk: onegoodthingteach.wordpress.co

And here's what I hung up:
docs.google.com/presentation/d
Photo representations of things, and then a written listing of what those photos represented.

I DIDN'T do everything on it. But having it up there, and me looking at it each day, helped remind me to do the things that I could make time for that would bring me joy.

One thing that I actually did follow through on is actually post "one good thing" every single day I was in school: onegoodthingteach.wordpress.co
I was really proud of keeping that commitment.

For some of us, time is running out and school is almost starting up. For others, you’re in the middle of summer (or winter if you’re down south)! To help out our friends who are starting up soon, let’s talk about some start of year stuffs! We have a bunch of “start of year” questions -- chose to respond to one or many!

1. Do you have any decorations, posters, a math play space, or something in your classroom(s) that you put up each year? If so, please share! (A picture always helps if you have one from years past!)

2. Do you have something on your desk that you absolutely love? A stamp that says “Show your work!” or a framed letter from a student or an organizer you can’t live without or a special set of grading pens you love? Share, please!

3. What’s the very first thing you say to your new students on the very first day?

4. Back to school nightmares. They’re weird, they’re awful, and it feels good to know others are having them. Have you ever had them? Do you still have them? What are they about?

In our next prompt, we’ll have people share some of their first day lessons… So start thinking about what you’ve done with your kids in previous years!

I go back to school in 1.5 weeks and kids come 2 weeks from tomorrow! I'm actually going to go up tomorrow and work in my room because our "Meet the Teacher" night is on our first day to report, so there won't be time to get things put together then :( BUT - I'm hopeful that I can get it mostly done tomorrow and be able to walk out of there knowing things are mostly ready to be done.

The first question of is about decor and I need your help! I've attached a photo of my puzzle table below and the old and unusable coordinate grid board. I have 4 sections on it - a mathematician of the week, a math joke, a math fun fact, and a math quote. I've had this board for 2 years and I like it, but it's time for a change and that's where I need your help!

Should I keep this format? Should I change it to something more like a traditional bboard? If I keep it, what new ideas would you have (like a SET puzzle of the week, a mathemoji puzzle, etc?) The coordinate grid is not magnetic sadly :(
