Maybe dumb question but when we’re talking about a person who uses they/them in the past tense do we use was or were? Like, “they *were* a librarian for awhile” or is it “they *was* a librarian”? Were is plural and unless a person is a system they’re not plural… but “was” doesn’t seem right either. Am I overthinking things? English is weird lol

When it comes to , conservative religious people are like “We don't want them here!!!”. Meanwhile, not only do they have pronouns themselves, they also refer to God, a non-existent being people believe in for thousands of years, as “He”, “Him” and “His”.

Satire is not dead. It has just transcended from its humorous form into a non-humorous form.

Not sure if it’s hit Mastodon the same way it’s hit Bird App, but there’s some more pronoun hysteria, this time about Starfield. Here’s a video on it:

Unpopular opinion: Forget the whole pronoun game; just use “they” across the board and be done with it.

The singular they has been around since Shakespeare and it fits into conversation quite comfortably and naturally. I’ve been doing it for ages, and nobody even blinks at it.

This organic practice avoids the whole issue of people deciding what pronouns apply to them and then trying to get everyone else to comply.

Yes, it’s rude to misgender someone, but “they” has no gender, so it’s not an issue. It can’t be wrong, whether intentionally or not.

Frankly, I find the whole “here’s my pronouns, so fucking use them or else” thing to be pointlessly confrontational. It’s even more so when someone demands that we use a nonstandard pronoun that is entirely artificial.

Likewise, let’s just make bathrooms unisex and be done with it. If it means adding floor-to-ceiling booths for more privacy, all the better. Unisex makes for better load-balancing, as well.

The best way to fight the culture war is to pick the battles that matter, not purely symbolic ones that benefit the fascists more than anyone else.

Picked up a couple of books from an Oni Press sale. This one was really informative, even as someone who feels pretty aware - “A Quick & Easy Guide to They/Them Pronouns.” Would definitely recommend.

CalliEcho's Megaplex 2023 Con Badge

Nothing big today, just a quick drawing to use as a badge when I go to Megaplex this year (unless I don't go, in which case this is just a neat thing)!
Also featuring the return of green-haired Calli! It's actually still bleach-blonde right now, but soooooooooon.

I have my on my profile because I’m an ally, not because I’m trans or confused. Oh, and trans people aren’t confused either.

"...between my wife and I." "...but governing the state of Florida will just be up to I." Him ain't no intellectual, that's for sure. If was really so concerned about how people use , you'd think he'd learn to use them his own self.

I want to get a meme going. A la . I want to fake a "type" that has quick rageful reactions if someone uses some particular form or phraseology; chosen for absurdity, simplicity and recognizably for "average" native speakers.

Mispluralizing? Anything.

Like how Miss Attributed was famous for saying "It is up with that kind of pedanticism, with which I shall not put!"

Some grammar thing or other to get _pissed off_ about, cardboard signs and everything.

What if, when we share our pronouns, we reflect deeply on what it means to include a possessive pronoun in the list?

For example, I could use (he / him / his), but what kind of relationship between me, other people, ideas, and objects am I claiming when I think with “his”?

A fun experiment with this is in Ursula Le Guin’s book, the Dispossessed, where she writes the anarcho-syndicalist language used by people on Anarres.

Researching today for my actual job, the one that pays my bills.* Returning to the rich source that is the Voiceprint radio show episode on Women's Language and Literature from 1981.

ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/co

I can't get over how this old show took on the issue of editing, , & - not in exactly these terms, bc they didn't have this language yet.

*Sort of. It's contract, very part-time.
