Just spoke to a friend re accents. He brought up “aunt”—which people around here say like “ont” (rhymes with “jaunt” or “vaunt”). He derided those who pronounce it more like “ant” (rhymes with “rant” or “pant”).

I was once one of them. Before moving up from Pennsylvania at age 8, I recall talking about “my Ant Anne.” But over decades in New England, at some point I jauntily joined the Onts.

And you? Have you, consciously or not, betrayed your mother tongue?

No worries! Pronunciation was a major portion of the post. And of course linguistics is a deep well of fascination.

You may be ahead of me here, but if not: do you know about Erik Singer? He coaches actors in accents and dialects; through the years has made several of these Youtube videos about the subject. Wonderful stuff.
