Publishers will need to think about updating their style guides or at least issuing advice to editors/proofreaders, and editors/proofreaders should be alert for the issue.

Regarding Ukraine:

It's just "Ukraine".
Not "The Ukraine".

Also Kyiv, Odesa, Kharkiv, Lviv (not Kiev, Odessa, Kharkov, Lvov).

There's plenty of info around to explain the linguistic reasons, but essentially the names in parentheses are Russifications. Just as we no longer use Western/colonial names for many countries and cities, we must stop using Soviet-era ones for Ukraine. It's a sovereign country, and also it's been asking us to use non-RU names for years.

Perhaps the writer thought "Turkey-based" could cause momentary confusion with the ground-dwelling bird, but then why not rewrite to say "a competitor based in Turkey"?

I don't know what happened here, but making the effort to rewrite for clarity is always worthwhile.
