This is a very neat result: using ALMA, a team surveyed 39 massive cosmic clouds, or "star nurseries”… and found in the order of ~stellar seeds… and 99% of them lacked the mass to give birth to massive stars. It seems that core density might be more critical than mass for high-mass star formation.

High-resolution observations of the system IRAS 16293-2422 have revealed localized hot spots in the dusty material of the young stellar system.

These are most likely due to local shocks caused by fast gas motions rather than illumination from the .

This suggests that heat produced in shocks is an important factor during the early stages of the formation of protostars and the planetary disks around them.

An article published in the journal "Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society" reports a study of the open cluster NGC 3324, part of the Carina Nebula, one of the largest known star nurseries. A team of researchers used observations conducted with the James Webb Space Telescope to specifically study an area on the edge of NGC 3324 nicknamed the Cosmic Cliffs.

The article also features a beautiful image of Orion’s sword made from Spitzer, Herschel and WISE data by the inestimable Robert Hurt. This region is also known as the integral shaped filament and contains the Orion Nebula Cluster. Thanks to Pat Brennan for writing this great article. The goofy quotes are my responsibility. Now I’m focusing more on individual protostars. Here is a protostar imaged with Hubble in the IR (from an APOD featuring work of @geckzilla). Protostars form from the collapse of cold molecular cloud fragments, this image shows the cavities carved into such a fragment by jets and winds of gas from the protostar. Now, in the Investigating Protostellar Accretion program on JWST, we are obtaining spectral images of five protostars with the NIRSpec and MIRI MRS. (More later).
