Hmmh, although #OpenMPT or pt2-clone usually do a really good with #Amiga #Protracker mods, it seems Mortimer Twangs "I'm the passenger" sounds different on OpenMPT/pt2-clone and #UADE123 output...

Thought first it's the sinc filter (which does some funky things as well) or stereo panning (to prevent stereo aliasing effects) option but it's maybe some effect handling that differs to the emulated m68k player.

The horribly named chiptune "Fat Ma's Death", produced in early February 1996, was my first attempt at creating something more mellow and harmonic. As noted in the song's sample text:

"PoC created this sorrow-filled song. I'm not good in making names for my songs, so "Fat Ma's Death" was only thing I could come up with! The name has nothing to do with a experience I've had!"

With its many different parts and harmonies, it was the longest and most varied song I had created so far, tracking in at 1 minute and 45 seconds before looping.

My first attempt at a cover song was of Europe's epic "The Final Countdown", which since I first heard it in 1986, thought had one of the best synth lead melodies ever written.

Produced as a 4-channel chiptune, I remember struggling with both the chords and timing. It didn't end up as a perfect chip rendition of the original, but being a musically untrained 15-year old when I made it in early February 1996, I think it came out okay.

The spring of 1991 saw the release of "Space Debris" by Markus "Captain" Kaarlonen. It had won first prize in a music competition in Sweden (Anarchy Easter Party), and was making its rounds across many different BBSes (now all lost to time.).

I had downloaded a copy, and was immediately awestruck at just how well it was put together. Here was someone who was determined to transcend the four channel, 8-bit, small sample constrained format and make something that sounded much bigger than its container.

With careful use of sample offsets, volume fades, and sample crossfades, he was able to make something that flowed, and did not sound like it was put together with 8-bit sample fragments. Here, finally, was a module that demonstrated what #Protracker 1.1A, in the right hands, could achieve.

As someone who loved to write music in trackers, it also intimidated the shit out of me. :)

Sound-wise, "Chip Fabric" isn't very chippy, but with a file size of less than 10 kB, it's within the limits of what one would consider a "chip tune" back when I produced this as a 15-year old in January 1996. It's also a very short tune of only 22 seconds, looped.

I remember being quite proud of this one, and the blurb I wrote in the sample text is proof of my over-the-top confidence:

"Another chip by PoC. I'm like an industrial Chip Fabric! 5 chips has been produced on my P60 in the last week! I must be special...?(NOT!)"

Never mind that while translating the Norwegian word "fabrikk" to English, I was clueless to the fact that "fabric" means "cloth" and not "factory". I still think the name "Chip Fabric" has a cool sound to it.

(If you don't know what the heck this is, it's used for putting a tracked piece of music, composed with 'pretracker' (which is different from protracker (: ) in your executable. Normally used for demos, can be used in games. Could be used in anything Amiga, really. (: )

Protracker is of course better because it can be used on Amiga, and Pretracker is windows only, which means it can't be used anywhere at all (: (I have no idea if it runs under Wine and quite frankly, don't care. If it's gonna continue the ancient platform wars, fuck 'em. )

Because someone may be using Pretracker and need to put this into a demo.
Because reverse engineering a binary blob and freeing it is awesome.
Because I wanted to.

After "Tiny Chip’s Revenge", I was on a chip production spree and made a few dozen chip tunes over a few weeks.

“Crossed Heart” is a two-channel chip tune that isn’t much to listen to, but it was a fun challenge to only have two of the usual four channels available.
