Mad Doctor of Blood Island (1968), a low-budget Philippines-shot horror film with a vague Island of Dr Moreau mad scientist vibe, and green-blooded monsters. Good monster makeup. Unashamedly lurid and trashy and schlocky and I enjoyed it.

Love After Death (1968), a 1968 erotic horror film of obscure origin. It starts with a man being buried alive. He survives, he pursues women and people try to kill him again. It becomes increasingly nutty, but in a good way. Wonderfully crazy.

Aenigma (1987), a fine late Lucio Fulci film (I do like late Fulci). Seriously surreal and twisted. Unsettling and perplexing but in a way that is original and distinctive. It takes place in a nightmare world in which reality plays little part.

Sergio Martino's The Island of the Fishmen (1979). Prison ship survivors are marooned on an island and they're up against monsters, voodoo and mad people. It's a glorious romp done with style and energy and a slight steampunk vibe. Great fun.

Norifumi Suzuki's Sex and Fury (1974), a period piece set during the Meiji Restoration, but still very much a pinky violence movie (and a great one). With Reiko Ike, plus Christina Lindberg as an English gambler, gunslinger and spy. Superb.

The Doll of Satan (1969), an Italian gothic horror film with some krimi and giallo elements. A woman inherits a spooky gothic castle and has visions of dungeons and torture with herself as victim. It's OK but needed a bit more style and energy.

Joe Dante's Piranha is the notorious 1978 Jaws rip-off from Roger Corman, with piranhas rather than sharks. Reasonably gory but great fun. Barbara Steele is delightfully evil. I often enjoy rip-off movies more than the movies they ripped off.

Lips of Blood (1975) marks the end of the first phase of Jean Rollin’s career, in which Rollin tried to combine unconventional erotic horror with full-blooded surrealism. Its commercial failure forced him to change direction. A great movie.

Bruno Mattei’s Shocking Dark (AKA Terminator II, 1989) manages to be a rip-off Aliens, Terminator and Alien. It's not so much an homage as grand larceny. Which is fine by me. I love these Italian rip-off movies and this one is great fun.

Grease (1978) is a movie I'd never seen. Not at all what I expected. It's kind of crazy, in an interesting way. The 50s and the 70s all mixed up together plus some extra weirdness. Seeing it now it has a bit of a psychotronic vibe. I liked it.

Slithis (AKA Spawn of the Slithis) is a low-budget 1978 US sci-fi/horror movie. A slime monster from the deep is on a killing rampage in California. A good old-fashioned monster movie that doesn’t try to be too clever. Stock up on beer and popcorn and you'll have fun.

Dimension 5 (1966) tries to combine espionage and scifi in an ambitious way and considering the tiny budget it’s a lot better than one might have feared. In fact it’s fun, with spies jumping across space and time and plots to blow up cities.

I tried so hard to like Transylvania 6-5000 (1985). I really did. I like 80s comedy. I like Jeff Goldblum. And it has Geena Davis as the cutest sexiest vampire you've ever seen. But for me the humour just fell flat. Your mileage may vary of course.

Alice, Sweet Alice (AKA Communion, 1976) is a Catholic schoolgirl slasher movie with major giallo influences. A weird mix that often threatens to self-destruct but somehow it works.

A movie that has lost none of its shock value but it’s more than just a cheap shockfest. It’s a strange but effective horror film.
