Also had another double-LP arrive recently, this time from Ott. I backed the Kickstarter he had for his album 'Heads' to be pressed to vinyl, and I went with the black version. There's actually a sleeve-sized poster inside of it of the front cover. I have all of Ott's albums on vinyl so far, and I believe on CD too. I think Heads is better than his prior album, Fairchildren.

SHPONGLE STATIC - Live At Ozora, 2019

Another live album, but this time with a twist! Or a twisted take, Simon and Merv joining forces. It's a pairing that few could have predicted (never mind that Eat Static remix from way back), but makes perfect sense when played out.

Honestly, even though there's a mix of Shpongle and Eat Static tracks, this mostly sounds like a Shpongle album remixed by Eat Static, giving the former's #PsyDub and #WorldBeat tunes some extra #PsyTrance heft and punch.

SHPONGLE - Codex VI

For as much they get credited for pioneering #PsyDub with this project, Shpongle really haven't gone to it much since their first LP. Absolutely a lot of folks were influenced by it, but these two seemed more intent on exploring other sounds in the years after.

Not so with "CODEX VI", about as #PsyDub as I've ever heard Shpongle go! May as well indulge the sound everyone assumes you're known for, right? Honestly surprised Ott wasn't hanging around the studio for this one.

SHPONGLE - Museum Of Consciousness

I don't want to say this album sounds like Simon returning to form, because I'm sure the group's evolution into more of a fully-fleshed band was enjoyed by some. Back to basics, then? Yeah, that's a good journalist cliché.

Seriously tho', this does sound like a more typical #PsyDub / #PsyChill / #WorldBeat project, with Mr. Posford's electronics doing most of the heavy musical lifting. There's Real Musicians on hand, just not as prominent as before.

SHPONGLE - Nothing Lasts... But Nothing Is Lost

I remember a hullabaloo over this being the last Shpongle album, Simon & Raja not really sure where to go with the project despite all the #Psy scene fame it created.

I also remember folks not being too keen on this, lacking the #PsyDub defining traits of the first, and the #WorldBeat hooks of the second. It's a cool concept tho', like an album-long jam session if you'd seen them live. But yeah, kind of musically rambly for large portions too.

SHPONGLE - Remixed

Only two albums deep, and we're already getting a remix album? Well, it's not like Simon and Raja were in much of a hurry to make more music together, and folks clearly wanted more. So round up a few of #PsyTrance and #PsyDub's movers and shakers, and see what they can create with their tunes.

Can't say there's much in the way of surprises tho'. Most of these remixes are about as you'd expect from the players involved (Eat Static, Ott, Total Eclipse ...Brothomstates?)

SHPONGLE - Are You Shpongled?

I tempered my expectations going into this one - after all, there's been a quarter-CENTURY of evolution from what Simon and Raja started here. And yeah, there are some early, tropey elements at play, sounding not much removed from the Megadog era of psychedelic world beat and dub.

But man, once these tracks hit their third acts, they really jam it out. Easy to hear just how much it influenced so much to come.
