New #Triassic #fossil features sharp claws and a beak
Non-flying precursor to #pterosaurs shared the Earth with the first #dinosaurs. Venetoraptor gassenae is the name of this new species of #lagerpetid, that lived about 230mya in #Brazil. The beak appears to be without teeth, although they may not have been preserved. Team suggests it could use it to eat hard fruit or tear flesh from prey. In extant birds, beaks help with vocalization, thermoregulation, & sexual display

Best #pterosaurs:
Anurognathus, the flying muppet!
Hatzegopteryx, the T. rex of the skies!
Kunpengopterus, the grabby goblin berd!
Pterodaustro, the baleen flamingo!
Caiuajara, ummm don't have a fancy name I just like their crest-shape...
My take on Scleromochlus by paleoartist Gabriel Ugueto. Exciting times as we're finding more and more basal archosaurs that lead to both dinosaurs and pterosaurs.

A look at what is probably a precursor of the flying pterosaurs.
""It was relatively small compared to the giants that would follow it later in Earth’s history. With a hip height of approximately 0.3 meters (about a foot) and a length of perhaps a meter (roughly three feet), this ancient reptile existed long before the evolution of the pterosaurs most of us recognize."

#Pterosaurs are so cool but the name sounds like a cheap knock-off of #dinosaurs. Like Digimon vs Pokemon, or Gobots vs Transformers, or Mega blocks vs Lego. I attribute their comparative unpopularity to this branding disaster!

Pterosaurs have always been some of my favorite #archosaurs. It's a shame they didn't survive along with birds, as they would have given us an interesting way to compare flight mechanics between both groups.
