I tried the Threads app for about a week, listed my concerns (threads.net/t/CuXo7PzOgiJ/), and then deleted the app from my devices.

seems to be an opportunistic user data harvesting exercise fed by superficial IG-like engagement (which is why I deleted FB and IG apps a long time ago). The Threads app/platform prioritizes many less important things over mature thought or discourse.

(I’ve kept a Mastadon app on my device.)

Has anyone else noticed a lot of nasty ageist comments going around? I guess it's just what the trolls think they got to troll me with...

is full of talk about the value of life. Yet, through inaction, America lets pregnant women die at rates that far exceed other wealthy countries. We seem especially about the deaths of Black mothers.😢

It's going down the drain over there...

"Search for the word “” on and the first automatic recommendation isn’t “climate crisis” or “climate jobs” or even “climate change” but instead “climate scam.”

Clicking on the recommendation yields dozens of posts denying the reality of climate change and making misleading claims about efforts to mitigate it.

Such misinformation has flourished on Twitter since it was bought by Elon Musk last year but the site isn’t the only one promoting content that scientists and environmental advocates say undercuts public support for policies intended to respond to a changing climate."

It is time for journalists and actors with an active engagement in public discourse to put on both braces and belts. I look into the current situation with Twitter, as well as point to ways forward. It is high time to review the alternatives. A society should not chance that the whims and fancies of an individual entrepreneur set the pace for development and the future of society's public discourse.

Particularly interesting conclusion: it's not the business models that fuel or but ultimately it boils down to political opinions and decisions. of helps but won't fix the problem.

Does anyone here know or has done comparing the ‘68 revolution with how the press is treating the movement today?
I’d really love to get a sense whether the harsh tone, hate even, is similar to what people faced 50 years ago. Any pointers highly appreciated! 🙏💚

Favorite long read of the day compares social media to a digital coffehouse:
newstatesman.com/culture/2022/

..."its financial viability depends on its attractiveness to its patrons, not on manipulating or exploiting the discourse it hosts. They can say or write anything they want, up to the point where it fundamentally jeopardises the civility of the establishment or threatens directly to harm other patrons."

@farhanasultana Hi 👋
It's also a unique occasion to set a new tone for . is not a blank slate, but with the new massive influx of people, it's also the perfect time to collectively settle on new .

The lack of curation/fiddling will be both a blessing —no financial incentive to bubble-up enraging content to keep the userbase hooked— and a curse — will take more effort without an algorithm spoon-feeding us more-or-less-relevant content—.
