The Public Order Bill is yet another part of the government’s anti-democratic mission. Illiberal databases sit at the core of policing over protest, now with emboldened surveillance and search powers.
It‘s a preemptive kettling of protest and thought.

The controversial #PublicOrderBill passed UK Parliament yesterday. The UN's Human Rights chief Volker Turk has called the legislation "deeply troubling" and says that it imposes restrictions on freedom of expression and peaceful assembly that are "neither necessary nor proportionate."
In this photo, last Sunday, a campaigner writes the names of two recent high-profile protest arrestees — 'Marcus and Morgan' — on the outer wall of the Houses of Parliament. They won't be the last.
The Public Order Bill will soon become law. It will severely restrict the right to protest.

"Tough decisions" — a phrase that's been frequently used by the UK's conservative government for years now — is a euphemism for bypassing democratic popularity; those in power claiming to know "what's best" for the electorate even if the electorate doesn't want it.
It's treating voting adults like children incapable of doing "the right thing." It happened when the Home Office pushed through the #PublicOrderBill. And it played out to the extreme in #France yesterday.
It's very much on the rise.

Has the government misleadingly tucked a public order provision into the #OnlineSafetyBill to leverage powers in containing protesters being pursued under the #PublicOrderBill? We're facing a dangerous attack on our rights that shrinks democratic debate. Find out more in our blog. #protest #humanrights

The #PublicOrderBill is back in the Lords today with our right to #protest at stake. But the government doesn't want to just restrict this right at street-level. As Baroness Chakrabarti raised in the debate, they also want to strip away dissent online with the #OnlineSafetyBill. The reference to s.5 Public Order Act under 'illegal content' means images or videos constituting offences under the Act will be removed from social media, further threatening democratic discussion. #rights #ukpolitics

"Thought Crime" The Public Order Bill proposes powers that will allow a police officer to conduct a stop and search without the need for reasonable suspicion.

Public Order Bill clauses blocked in the House of Lords. The Suspicionless Stop And Search clause has been overturned but other points in the Bill can be voted back in by the House of Commons. The Lords made important amendments to the #PublicOrderBill including:
1 Defeating Government amendments that would enable police to pre-emptively restrict protests on the off-chance they may become disruptive later on
2 Removing powers to stop and search protestors without suspicion
3 Removing the courts’ ability to impose protest banning orders on people who have not been convicted of a crime
However, the Government now have the chance to vote again on the last two points. It's not over yet!
Did anyone have "unelected representatives stepping in to defend basic democratic freedoms from destruction by elected representatives" on their bingo card because I sure as hell didn't.

More good news for #protest freedom today. The UK #HouseofLords rejected government plans under the #PublicOrderBill to allow police to preventatively shut down a protest on *suspicion alone* that it may cause disruption. Speculative policing is held back again, at least for now. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-64561868
