Xcel Energy won yet another rate hike. This one to help cover the cost of closing its dirtiest coal plant early and budget overruns on another project.
This is a classic, "socialize the risks, privatize the profits" situation.
We win early closure on a coal plant that shouldn't have ever been built and Xcel turns to us to keep filling its coffers. Even when we win, we lose.
This is why we need #PublicPower not investor-owned utilities.

Proud of the work I did to help lead approval of an important set of projects which will help our #PublicPower utility continue to meet the needs of our customers and be reliable, affordable, and increasingly environmentally sensitive.
Got this profile photo in the local paper from during the Board meeting.
Pluses and minuses I guess.
Oberlin, with a population of about 8,500, wants to set an example for other small cities about how to have a discussion about climate change, make a plan and implement the plan.
A big part of Oberlin’s ability to reduce its emissions is the fact that the city government owns its electricity utility.

Residents in Maine are about to be bombarded with a multimillion-dollar public relations campaign aimed at saving the state’s two dominant electric utilities from being voted out of existence in November.
If Mainers vote yes, they will make history – endorsing a first-of-its-kind plan to create a state-level, public power company through a hostile takeover.

Scoop by @GinoFanelli@twitter.com: The Rochester City Council is poised to fund a study which will look into the possible creation of a public utility. The bill won't be introduced in the budget, but a statement of necessity, a standalone bill which almost guarantees its passage.

Measure will also help shift utilities away from private companies to make them publicly owned
[This is a measure which my wife, a member of the EcoSocialists working group of the NYC chapter of Democratic Socialists of America, has been working on for four years.]

A resolution was passed unanimously by the #Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners who reflected the frustration of last week's #icestorm. It addresses issues surrounding the extensive #poweroutages.
Yousef Rabhi, the commissioner representing the 8th District, wants to determine the feasibility of a county-run #municipalpower utility. Also, he wants to see the county lobby for passage of some bills in the state legislature.

I was elected to the Board at my local #PublicPower district in 2018 on a platform of #CleanEnergy and #ClimateAction for my community. In the past 4 yrs we set a net zero by 2050 policy, approved a resolution affirming the scientific consensus on climate change, and are building the first utility scale solar which will double installed MW in the state of Nebraska.
Honored to be working alongside so many dedicated people in my community, and you all from around the world.
