@JamesGleick. Reading this was like experiencing food poisoning. Increasing sense of nausea with each paragraph read. But so so grateful to and and for bringing to the light these gross violations.

Finished reading Trust by Hernan Diaz.

Have not read a more fascinating book in quite a while. But my taste in literature is uncommon, and I'm known for selecting books that make me think over entertainment alone. It's not a book for everyone.

Still thinking about Trust today: Its several forms and voices, its surfaces, its depths, its philosophical juxtapositions, its psychologies, and the surprising achievement of such a work.

Tributes Pour in for Author Cormac Mccarthy 'A Loss Beyond Measure'

McCarthy was a highly acclaimed and awarded author perhaps best known for works including "All the Pretty Horses," his commercial breakthrough in 1992, and "The Road," which won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

His books, which often incorporated dark themes and apocalyptic landscapes, helped propel him to the status of one of the greatest modern American writers.

Like everything else she writes, "The Night Watchman" by Louise Erdrich is brilliant. Set against the backdrop of a Congressional effort to terminate Indian tribes, Erdrich blends romantic comedy, history, and the struggle to find and save one's identity. As always, rich tribal and family histories loom mystically large.

WashPost: Forgetting a Child in the Backseat of a Car Is a Horrifying Mistake. Is It a Crime? (This haunting 2009 longform story by Gene Weingarten won a the next year.)

"“Death by hyperthermia” is the official designation. When it happens to young children, the facts are often the same: An otherwise loving and attentive parent one day gets busy, or distracted, or upset, or confused by a change in his or her daily routine, and just... forgets a child is in the car. It happens that way somewhere in the United States 15 to 25 times a year, parceled out through the spring, summer and early fall. The season is almost upon us."

Today in Labor History May 26, 1937: Henry Ford unleashed his company goons on United Auto Workers organizers at the “Battle of the Overpass” near the River Rouge plant. General Motors and Chrysler signed collective bargaining agreements with the UAW in 1937, but Ford held out until 1942. Ford Motor Co. security guards attacked union organizers and supporters attempting to distribute literature outside the plant. The guards tried to destroy any photos showing the attack. However, a few survived and they inspired the Pulitzer committee to establish a prize for photography.

I finished the fantastic nominated WHEN BREATH BECOMES AIR today in one gulp. It’s the story of Paul Kalanithi, a resident who finds out he has terminal cancer in his early 30s and writes about the process of dying over the last few months of his life.

Yes, it’s a sad book, but it is also chock full of revelations on the reality of the surgical profession, for others and oneself, and finding quality in a life with an expiration date.

Read my DNF review of Hernan Diaz's "Trust," in which I attempt to take on this year's highly popular Pulitzer winner about the exploits of a Gilded Age investment tycoon, but realize quickly that this is one of those 21st-century books that takes what should be a sophisticated, nuanced, complex topic and boils it down to the idiot-friendly message "RICH PEOPLE BAD!!!!" goodreads.com/review/show/5556

"Invisible Child" d'Andrea Elliott Un des meilleurs livres que j'ai lus cette année. Prix Pulitzer 2022 de la non-fiction, il décrit 8 ans d'une famille noire-américaine et sans-abri à New York. L'autrice revendique un "journalisme immersif" où le récit et les dialogues, toujours mis en contexte avec la politique, prennent aux tripes. La pauvreté est un cercle vicieux dont il est difficile de s'extraire sans l'aide des puissants
