I am about to move to a place with a 180m hill (nearly cliff) next door to it.
If I put a water tank at the top, and my neighbour puts a water tank at the bottom, can we use the hill as a battery?
How big is the smallest setup that makes any sense?

@mpesce already happening

“…an eight hour big battery [] emerged as the winner of its first long duration storage auction, beating several highly fancied pumped hydro projects.”

@mpesce

When was Snowy2.0 supposed to come on line? Batteries are coming in cheaper than pumped hydro already. And this is for storage not stability.

Kemijoki Oy is considering the construction of up to 4 GW of in 200..600 MW units. The river is already ruined so why not.

Once up a time, Lake Onslow was called Dismal Swamp. In 1890 they dammed the Teviot River which feeds it and built a dam. In 1982 a new dam raised the water level by another 5m.

The government is continuing down the path of pumped hydro despite its estimated $16b price tag.

Is it a good idea? Are there workable alternatives? Because $16b would buy a lot of wind & solar, reducing the overall load on the grid.

@osma Depth 1400 m (YLE didn't find this worth mentioning). Actually with our bedrock, pumped-hydro installations could be built pretty much anywhere. Using a pre-existing mine saves some excavation work, which is inexpensive anyway using explosives.

Took a drive into Lake Onslow out of interest. It lies inland of Roxburgh. Investigation is underway to explore enlarging for storage for pumped hydro. Initial est cost $4b.
The various tunnel options could support up to 1500MW, with up to six turbines/pumps of 250MW each. For comparison, New Zealand’s largest hydro plant is Lake Manapouri, with installed capacity of 850MW. Huntly power station (coal) has a total installed capacity of 953MW."

@dmoser Pretty good. Half the megawatts of Dinorwig, but over twice the gigawatt hours...
