Viewed from this admittedly very distant vantage point, the progress of Silicon Valley wisdom looks like this:
2013: Billionaires have the answers. Especially Elon Musk.
2023: Billionaires have the answers. Just not Elon Musk.

@petergleick ~"The people who have paid my salary over the years have had little influence over my views. If anything it's been the opposite. To say that Clarence Thomas would behave differently would be racism, and I am not a racist. Surely the more money he is given by wealthy donors, the more independent he becomes! It's the basic lesson of the Law of Unintended Consequences."~
(forthcoming from Ben Shapiro, probably)

I’ve been reading #tech #news and #punditry for decades now, and have always found it generally high quality and interesting, but AI tech punditry is overall wildly off the mark and filled with irrelevant noise
The biggest single flaw is writing about current LLMs like they’re an endpoint, when we are still very, very early in AI tech emergence, no current product will be relevant in two years
This piece sums up my difficulty with the paid media.
On the one hand I want articles on topics like this, and to support them.
On the other hand I want (consistently) better quality than I can get from enthusiastic amateurs or people in the right spheres chatting on social media.
How publications tend to fail at this varies (I read a The Economist piece that was also both good and awful, for different reasons) but this just isn't a bar often cleared.
Or, maybe, Mastodon is doing precisely what it set out to do, providing a truly social and user-focused experience that birdsite-coddled clickwhores find doesn't feed their ego enough? Just a thought...

Remember this classic?
It's a wonder that he hasn't yet been snapped up by Semafor or The Hill. #Punditry
Hard not to wilfully misinterpret the "not to work in poetry" line as a warning to Andrea Jenkins to keep her eyes off his job. #punditry #analysis #thenewlarryjacobs

The greatest temptation in political commentary is to believe that what I want as a policy also happens to be the wisest political strategy.
