i think that soon may be the time to have a talk with my almost-4-year-old about cops, because in an episode of a show she watches, the narrator said "the 'don't talk to strangers' safety rule goes with the police car because the police arrest Bad People" and she's already getting other "cops are wonderful protectors of society" messages from media.

my kid already understands that grownups can be wrong or unkind, and she is good at questioning rules. so it will involve her applying this knowledge to cops—me telling her that cops will and do needlessly hurt people, especially people who aren't white, and that they will follow a rule even if the rule hurts people.

it's not going to be just one conversation—I'm going to do bits and pieces at a time so it gets integrated into her understanding of the world.

(I'm white and any advice for having these conversations with my also-white kid would be helpful.)

about a week ago, my 2-year-old asked me about my :ironfront: patch and antifa pin. i gave the explanation "it means that i want to protect you and others from bad people."

my toddler doesn't have enough grasp on abstract nouns to comprehend fascism and nazism yet, so i feel like this is a good developmentally-appropriate way to explain my various antifascist pins and patches.
