People of #Dogstodon, I need some #pupy advice please!

Our Berner puppy will be 3 months old next week. Sometimes, when he gets super-excited, he starts to growl and bite/tug at our clothes or hands. His body language is still playful but everything else says "aggressive".

The dog trainer we hired says we should just make him understand he shouldn't by shaking his leash (he wears a house leash) or making a loud noise to startle him. Someone else said we should put him in a time out if he's like that. Neither of these things have worked.

What else can we try? Big puppy's gonna be a much bigger dog and this kind of behavior feels like a Problem, capital P.
