This video by Louis Rossmann exposed @purism's bad customer support of a three year due refund and deceptive marketing about their #Librem5 phone being freedom respecting and secure when it actually isn't. In the video description there's also a link to a relevant HN thread. I wanna also add that the @fsf's #RYF program is garbage and should be reformed.

After a day with the #Purism5 I can say it can successfully makes and receives voice calls and can receive SMS messages. I'm kind of sad the chat program closes xmpp conversations & group chats when you exit the app though.
Also several design decisions for android & iOS make more sense.
I tried using the Tuba the new gnome mastodon client on the phone, but even when i closed the application window there was still a process running in the background eating precious battery power.
On the purism you rapidly learn "if you're not using the app, make sure it's terminated."
And then I was like oh yeah, android apps keep begging me for the "run in the background" permission.
So now I'm giving my linux apps the side eye and wondering "do you actually need CPU time if your window isn't visible?
The #PinePhone seems to have achieved better battery life by being really aggressive about suspending the main phone CPU, but they have a great deal of control over the modem so as to better trust it to wake the phone CPU up if something "important" happens, like getting a call.
But that's level of suspend is marked "experimental" on the Purism's OS.
Well this brings back some memories...

I was trying to run the gnome-authenticator #flatpak on my #Purism5 and it was failing. Some searches led me to suspect something with up with gnome-keyring #PureOS only had gnome-keyring 3.36 while Debian has 3.42, which does work with authenticator.
The Purism has a decent feature that when you plug it into a computer using USB, it just exposes a serial console.
And since the serial connection was enabled by default zmodem was the easiest way to upload files from my computer to the phone.
Some minor discoveries about the #PinePhone and the #Purism5
The pinephone's modem will initialize even if you put an inactive SIM card in it. You can't access any modem feature even unrelated things like the GPS signal without a SIM.
The Purism's battery life seems better with a SIM card in it. It was really struggling with power management without the SIM, to the point it was usually warm to the touch.
The Purism has a modern nano sim tray and it was easy to install a nano sim into it.
The Pinephone has a microsim internal slot and their nanosim converter was very hard to use and seemed prone to getting stuck. (And if it gets stuck there's no real way to get it back out because there are flexible pins that'll get stuck in the converter.)
The pinephone seems much easier to use with a microsim, say that 10 year old inactive one you had in your desk. Or at least that was me.
Some Foss projects I actively use and continually ticker with are :
#Openwrt router software
#Openhab home automation
#Nextcloud self hosted personal cloud storage
Some projects I'm actively interested in are:
#Purism5 I'm intrigued how successful this will be, if it become very usable I will switch in a heartbeat.
#MycroftAI I've funded this project of kickstarter and I can't wait till my mark 2 is delivered.
