Installed an outdoor air quality monitor yesterday from PurpleAir. Welcome to the PurpleAir community map, Bankview!

Just discovered #PurpleAir apparently forces you to use a #Google account to sign in? Guess I shoulda done more research. Maybe I can at least scavenge the sensors out of them or replace the firmware to make them do something useful.
The #PurpleAir web map is fine. But iOS and Mac folks, check out @paku. Gracefully usable, fully functional for free, with an optional subscription upgrade for a few extra features.
I run a #PurpleAir sensor in #ColeValley #SanFrancisco. I use the #AQI, temp, and other data to satisfy my own curiosity as well as for home automation. But my main motivation is to contribute my own bit of data to the common good. https://map.purpleair.com/1/i/mAQI/a0/p604800/cC5?select=67293

Now that the #purpleair in #eugeneoregon is over 100 and my kids' camps are getting canceled it's time to start bugging the school district about what their plan for fall is (as in they didn't have one last year beside just closing the ventilation and windows so kids could catch covid instead). Anyway, this will be a thread of my references.
Running an indoor box fan with a filter of the same size on the input side, hoping that it generally acts to keep out the crud that is in the outside air. Windows are closed, house HVAC set to "fan on".
Local AQI readings from #purpleair in the 230 range. I don't have a PM2.5 meter inside the house.
lol, so the #PurpleAir sensor:
- uses adhoc wifi for configuration (fine)
- disables that SSID once configured w/ your wifi (great)
- auto-updates firmware anytime it can get to purpleair.com (not great)
- the ”configuration check” re: when to turn the SSID back on for reconfiguration is…”can I get to purpleair.com?” (ugh)
so I’m forced to decide, would I rather:
- have them phone-home/auto-update
- have them all broadcasting passwordless SSIDs someone could use to pivot into my network
😩
This air mass over the south of the UK really needs to move on.
My new Purple Air monitor is opening our eyes to air quality, and should hopefully give us some good base data before they build the incinerator to the north of us

If you use an #Android #WearOS watch and are interested in #airquality , there is a decent (not perfect) complication you can install called "Air Quality" which puts #PurpleAir sensor data on your watch face. I've been using this for about a month with my Samsung Galaxy Pro 5 watch and it works pretty well.

AQI in southern QC has greatly improved because of the rain. But it looks absolutely terrible for MA to DC areas. We never got that kind AQI to what they're getting now 👀

@mikewren the #PurpleAir API integration gives more data (pm1, pm2.5 and pm10), but doesn't give you a computed AQI, strangely enough.
I suspect that the differences in #AQI between the EPA and #PurpleAir maps is due to the particulate concentrations being averaged over different time windows. Technically AQI is supposed to be calculated over 24 hour averages, but concentrations can change a lot over that time and the instantaneous values are useful to have. PurpleAir averages over 10 minutes in their graphs at least.
Did you know that #springfieldtownship #montco has a #purpleair quality monitor on or library? Curious to monitor what the local air quality is right now? In a more quantifiable way then just "it's real shitty". Check it out at https://springfieldmontco.org/government/advisory-boards-committees/environmental-advisory-commission/ - > air quality monitoring.

For those not familiar with #PurpleAir, they have a nice network of individuals running sensors.
Air quality is really horrendous in the NYC area right now. AQI index values over 300 are considered "hazardous", the worst category, and that is most of the dots on the map.

I was pleased to discover that there is a #PurpleAir integration for #HomeAssistant and a free-to-sign up API, so I can add the closest local sensor to my monitoring. I would still like to get my own sensor (especially for indoors), but this is a nice start.
If my new #PurpleAir Classic (née PA-II) is to be believed, the AQI in this room - the one with the probably-too-small air purifier we stole from the bedroom for the day - is…well. Not great. 92 on average and going up.
Def interested to see how it looks if I stick it outdoors or even just in the rest of the house (which smells/feels significantly worse than in here).
