Look at me! ...
I think this is a purple finch, though it could be a house finch. The Merlin Bird ID app lists purple finch as the first choice and house finch as the second. There is a distinct notch in the birds tail which I've read is a purple finch feature. Both species have a notch, but the purple finches is deeper.
"The Purple Finch is the bird that Roger Tory Peterson famously described as a “sparrow dipped in raspberry juice.” For many of us, they’re irregular winter visitors to our feeders, although these chunky, big-beaked finches do breed in northern North America and the West Coast. Separating them from House Finches requires a careful look, but the reward is a delicately colored, cleaner version of that red finch. Look for them in forests, too, where you’re likely to hear their warbling song from the highest parts of the trees." - allaboutbirds.org

Looking at some of the photos I took while @Jillianmarisa and I were volunteering for Cornell's #ProjectFeederWatch this past Saturday.
Pretty sure we miscounted this guy as a house finch. Pretty sure he's a purple finch. It's that tail notch and the color in the wing that has me sold. OOPS.

The purple finches outside our window are very polite by comparison to the goldfinches.
They often wait quietly at the side of the feeder until they see an opening.
Not like some other species who madly go in, every bird for itself.
