"Am 3. Oktober 2013 sank ein hölzernes Schiff mit flüchtenden Menschen vor der italienischen Insel Lampedusa, weit über 300 Menschen sind dabei ertrunken. Anschließend startete Italiens Marine die Mission »Mare Nostrum«, in der rund 125 000 Menschen in Seenot zum europäischen Festland gebracht wurden. Die EU-Grenzagentur Frontex hat diese staatliche Seenotrettung nach einem Jahr abgelöst und durch Flugzeuge und Drohnen ersetzt.
Fast zehn Jahre später ist am 14. Juni im Ionischen Meer vor der griechischen Stadt Pylos der Fischtrawler »Adriana« mit Hunderten Geflüchteten gesunken. Über 600 von ihnen könnten gestorben sein, nur 104 Menschen haben überlebt. Behörden aus Griechenland sowie Frontex sahen den Ertrinkenden zu, ohne selbst Hilfe zu leisten. Dazu war die griechische Küstenwache aber verpflichtet, denn die »Adriana« befand sich in ihrer Such- und Rettungszone009."
