Happy #fossilfriday . This is a pyrite fossil of a 400 million year old brachiopod from Ohio.

Purchased by my father at an art festival ~40 years ago, it hung in my office for 15 years until the pandemic. Every afternoon it would catch the sun.

Pyrite fun fact:
Pyrite is also know as 'Fools Gold,' but the fools don't realize that it can actually contain significant amount of 'invisible' gold!!!! Here is a image of a gold containing pyrite from Nevada, and maps showing the distribution of gold at the micrometer (bottom-left), and atomic scale (top-left)!!

Imagine the people who stumbled upon #pyrite and thought they struck #gold.

Another lump of microscopic tetrahedral #quartz and cubic #pyrite geometry. These atoms were assembled 280 million years ago, dug up, discarded and #fossicked from #minewaste at #Nangiles mine, #Cornwall. Trace copper bearing minerals have stained the quartz mint green.

Sulfides love to attach themselves to organic matter, resulting in some pretty spectacular fossilization. When fossils form near iron deposits, the weathered metals provide the foundation for pyritization. Here, #pyrite has replaced an ammonite shell, filling the chambers with glittering #crystals

These #Jurassic Quenstedticeras replacements are found in Russia and are polished to reveal the mineralized interior.
