Welcome to our discussion!
Sijie Hu confirms marital fertility was moderate in Qing China 1620-1900. No clear evidence of early stopping or longer spacing implying an absence of conscious fertility control. Still, cultural practices eg polygyny lowered marital fertility. Based on new data for 7767 women in 5 lineages. Open access in Asia-Pacific Econ His Rev @apehr

#FishyFriday: Gong Gu, Nine Carp, #Qing dynasty, 19th c.?, set of 4 hanging scrolls, ink & color on paper
>IIt refers to “nine similitudes" - nine comparisons that imply eternity or longevity ("like mountains," "like streams," and so on). Because the term for "similitude" sounds like the term for "fish,” paintings of nine fish became conventional expressions of wishes for longevity and constancy.<

Recent research involves the Han servant escaping from Manchu family in Kangxi period (c. 1660s-1720s), or say, the "Fugitive Law" 逃人法.
I can't help considering anachronism in contrast with what we learned in the storm of 2022. It is the same nightmare.

The focus of such 'amazing price at auction' news stories is always on money value and implied greed or luck of seller - not technology, art, culture, history and the value that cannot be monetised.
A beautiful vase is reduced to the same as a lottery ticket or NFT. It is not, nor should we let people lie to us that it is.
Capitalism rots the soul. If it had not been monetised would they even have found the vase newsworthy? Soulless hacks!
