Very pleased the #OpenScience bootcamp at #PennState came to fruition! We kicked off with a great plenary from Tim Errington, @openscience. So many great workshops: #replication, #QRPs, #datamanagement, #preregistration, #datasharing https://penn-state-open-science.github.io/bootcamp-2023/index.html

Should we be investigating the trustworthiness of the research or the researcher?

In our #LabMeeting, we discussed an interesting preprint pointing out the relevance of researchers degrees of freedom and #QRPs in #simulation studies:

"In comparison to researchers in the US, European researchers admit to more #QRPs [questionable research practices] and are less confident in maintaining high RI [#ResearchIntegrity] standards" - preprint from #SOPs4RI

Is the 🇺🇸 more ethical than the 🇪🇺 ... or more naïve?

Unearned #authorship pervades #science
👉 Research-#integrity survey also suggests that there is a split in US- and Europe-based researchers’ perceptions of ‘questionable #research practices’.
"Around 69% of researchers based in Europe and roughly 55% in the US said that they were aware of co-authors being listed who hadn’t contributed sufficiently"
"Inadequate #peerreview and poor supervision were the next most common #QRPs"

@tedpavlic I'm sure it's not the intention - indeed they add a cautionary note - but this kind of advice leads to HARKing & other questionable research practices that massage research into a neat narrative.
It's the antithesis of #OpenScience practices like #RegisteredReports. You should start with a research question, a summary of what is known, & then the methods. Post-hoc theorising must be declared. It keeps you honest.

(1) risk of #bias assessments
(2) modifications in primary outcomes that were registered in trial registration records (proxy for selective reporting bias);
(3) ratio of the achieved to planned sample sizes; and
(4) statistical discrepancy.

Looks like a great talk from Stephan Guttinger on Questionable Research Practices
“What should be abandoned is not the idea of questioning practice, but the idea that there is a class of questionable research practices.”
