The first non-trivial lower bound for E.D. was given by Aaronson and Shi.
The upper bounds for E.D. were later improved from N^(3/4) to N^(2/3) by Ambainis in https://epubs.siam.org/doi/abs/10.1137/s0097539705447311 using a Quantum Walk approach to match the lower bound by Aaronson and Shi.

This can be used to simulate the behavior of certain exotic particles called non-Abelian anyons.
